I know all of the old-school Italians put them in their gardens to keep them out. I think the smell is a deterrent. I can't imagine them wanting to eat them.

Really. If they repel cats, why the helI would they eat it?

That's what confused me with the mothball toxicity to cats post. They aren't great for humans either. I can't imagine anything with a sense of smell eating mothballs.
