When we bought our house, we were intrigued by the fact that there is a toilet and shower head in the basement...i don't mean it has a bathroom, I mean that it's there in the open, and still working, without walls for privacy.

This is an older toilet, not a pull chain type, but the tank is divorced from the bowl, and mounted to the wall, and connected to the bowl by a steel pipe. The shower is on the other side of the room, and this section of the basement has three floor drains.

After doing some research, we found out that when the steel workers would come home from work, they would enter the basement from the outside, shower the dust from the mill away, and use the toilet before coming upstairs for dinner.

My wife was wanting to have these fixtures removed, but I think I've talked her into keeping them, if only to keep the house original...somewhat. The house was built in 1900, on the side of a steep hill, and wasn't originally built with indoor plumbing.

Those of you either from the Pittsburgh area, or currently living here, would know about these interesting additions.

My sister has one of these in her restored home. It was a company owned house built in 1930 by Bethlehem Steel and Sparrows Point, MD.
