just a comment. Infractions can be of any length the mod chooses ...from one hour to permanent.

My thoughts as a mod are to first try to get folks to behave, but some are defiant and somehow think if they persist they will somehow "win". For those folks warnings don't work.

I really like having colorful folks here in OD, that is what is here for, but we have rules for a reason. If they can stick to reasoning and not attacking people they are very welcome.

Despite the cost of living, have you noticed how popular it remains?

Seems like everybody is on edge again this week and last...not sure why. I have had to back down my involvment in some threads to keep my head (and I'm sure those with whom I've been engaging discussion) straight. In some threads I've even had to ask (at the risk of sounding pompous) to avoid the name calling since it detracted from logical discussion. I think everyone just kind of needs to take a chill pill every so often around here, and that goes for about 90% of us. At this rate the 2012 election is going to result in the banning of about 3/4 the forum

It doesn't seem to be what you say, but who you say it about. Some are fair game while others are protected species and, oddly enough, the political leanings of said protected members coincidentally aligns with the powers that be. That being said I wouldn't want the job, and I wouldn't expect things to be any different- He who has the gold makes the rules.

It sounds like a very inappropriate system. "Absolute power" to a small group.
Previously there have been times when webmaster has felt the need to revoke some infractions. Unfortunately there are many suggesting he may need to take a more active roll again.

Advancing the idea of a "win" is not something I would do. For every win there is a loss, or for every winner there is a looser. Setting in place the idea of some sort of battle only creates division. Conciliation appears to have been taken over by adversiry practices.

Given the level of concern being expressed by members about the lopsidedness of allowed comments & the history of moderating, one would expect a more even & open approach.

Deletion/permanent closing of threads as apposed to closing for a short time ( I have seen one of the other mods do this very effectively) is probably something that some feel has been going on recently too much.

It wont be 3/4 of the members being banned in the lead up to the election as many will have already gone & taken their spare parts purchases with them.

Less "draconian classroom" style control always works better with adults.

There are far too many who choose to push other peoples buttons for the sole purpose of having that person infracted.

I think there's some confusion about which members are "expressing concern." First, I don't believe that points of view are being criticized, it's the manner in which those points are being expressed, ie. personal derogatory attacks, which are clearly a violation of the forum's rules. Where "open discussion" merely becomes an exchange of comments of one's intelligence, sexuality, religious beliefs, or other matters for the sole purpose of insult, then it's no longer a "discussion."

Equal treatment, doesn't equate to tolerance of bad behavior.
