A Move to Texas--Tornados
As well as the 95 hail storm.....
The news footage that evening showed a LOT of people that was at mayfest--Blood streaming down them, every ambulance from Tarrant -and lots from Parker and Dallas county were rushed to Trinity park, there were destroyed cars littering university and camp bowie--My brothers w124 was destroyed there that day-Benz had previously fixed it --crashed twice at 60mph. It looked like war footage of Beruit except with green foliage around. the area hadn't seen anything like it except 5 yrs later --oh No--- http://www.fortwortharchitecture.com/tornado.htm I lived a quarter mile west of trinity park and was driving home from mid cities on airport freeway, there was this BIG Mean black cloud sweeping in from the NW. Usually i hit 35 and did the joggle to 30 and on to montgomery street but for some reason i took 6th street thru down town--I crossed thru town and was heading for the river, I came to where the cattlemans museum is now and looked up..................................................................... I dont know how long I stared but I did say OH F***, I was watching the twister chew thru the Cash America Pawn building next to the Trinity, It was 250 yards in front of me. I was driving my 68 Camaro convertible with the custom f-glass top i designed, I took a left quick up the hill past the museum and got to the next side street when the top got sucked off the car--I didn't have it latched in the back and it would ride fine. oh **** I floored it and made it to the top of the hill and left the vertible sitting and ran for a truck loading dock in back of a shriners hospital and it sounded like a jet heading 20 ft above me. After it passed I got back in the car and headed back down the hill, The car top was 20 yards away from where it got sucked off, The inner liner got ripped in two and I found both pieces and there was a dazed guy who crauled out of a drainage port--from under the street, I headed back down to 6th and headed thru all the crap ---The Cash America building looked like a action movie destruction set-supersized--with a car in a tree out at the street and all other cars around Destroyed-- There wasn't really anything that wasn't--Except the prayer tower of the church next to the cash america building--that had a group of people why were inside. Iwrock There is natural distruction here too, No one reallt thinks about something like a tornado untill they go thru one. They are Giant monsters that roam the country killing people and theres little you can do except have a storm cellar. Last edited by panZZer; 04-21-2011 at 02:23 PM. |

The Cash America Pawn he is talking about is not a strip mall pawn shop. It is the headquarters building and is about ten stories tall. I would guess it covers about 50% of a city block.
I don't know it they rebuilt it or if it was torn down. The church next door was a large one and it was leveled. I think this might have also been the storm that blew out a lot of glass from a number of skyscrapers in downtown. One landmark bank building was declared a total loss and it was about 20 stories hight. The storms in Texas can pack a punch. |

I grew up in what is supposed to be called Rosen Heights but is, or used to be called, Northside, close to the intersection of Long and Azle. I spent a lot of time in the Main and Exchange area during the 50's when it was a very rough place. I am so old I even attended movies at the New Isis and skated at that place on Azle Ave. which I guess is still there on the north side of the street just west of what used to be the Trinity Methodist Church, or just west of where Azle makes that dogleg.
I even shopped at Clark's Discount before it became Billy Bob's. It was the Super Wal-Mart of its' day. The Stockyards area, which is currently a tourist area for those of you not from the area, looks odd to me now. Without seeing a knife fight now and then it just don't seem like home. |

I was there a few years ago when a tropical storm was passing though. A friend and I had driven his track-prepped BMW on racing slicks from California to Texas. Not a great idea...
I met two really awesome people that trip! I met G-Benz and DavidMash. I should be going back to Texas around late September / early October. If anyone wants to get together, I am game.

You should move down to Houston - the only time we get tornados down here is when they follow the hurricanes.

We were camped out on the plains on the rim of the Purgatoire River last week. There had been tornado warnings earlier in the day to the north of us and the winds started coming up at night along with strong thunder and lightening. I was trying to think about what the best course of action might me. Certainly no storm cellars nearby but there was a concrete outhouse. If that outhouse hadn't been there the only course of action that I could imagine was that my friend and I should tie ourselves to the largest juniper tree in the vicinity and hope for the best.
