For the Train fans here

Some of you know, I volunteer with a Railroad locally. We've been working on restoring a locomotive, I had hopes of putting Mercedes at it's heart but I was Waylayed by a hydraulic engineer who said he could make the hydro system work... weelll... he did... so I thought I'd share the video's of todays Successful Testings. the engine is out of time a little and it smokes like mad. theory is that they walk hand in hand... so anyways.

I was running the controls on here. Not a great one, but I had my mind on running this thing and looking at pressure gauges

This is just a overview of the whole hydro system. there was a slight mishap at a switch so we needed a jack...

I would say that engine is more overloaded than out of time.

I guess I'm not understanding the power feature... Does that contraption run on the "water-movement" from the 4 cylinder diesel engine? I sure don't see any "steam," so that's not the driving force....or is it??

Lots of trains up here at the National Railroad Museum. Ever make it up this way?

The 'steam' loco part is just along for show. The diesel/hydraulic part lives hidden in the fake steam locomotive's tender and does all the work.

That's a slick setup with the two-way spool to control that hydraulic motor's rotation. You know, that's not the first time for a diesel/hydraulic...

R Leo has it.. I'm not a major fan of the system however if it works it's a means to an end. there's several people who work with the R.R who thought they wouldnt live long enough to see this engine move under it's own power again..

@landyaghtlover: No, I've not been to the R.R museum. Funny. Lived there most of my life and never have been to it. though it's on my list of places to go when I get back to WI for a trip

Nothing at all wrong with that arrangement. It gives the manufacturer the option of building and powering a 'steam' loco or 'diesel' using the same power unit. Most parts are off the shelf as well. Depending on where you are located (ambient temp) and the severity of the service (continuous duty), a cooling loop in the return line may be well advised to protect those hydraulics.

Now that I see it in the flesh, a 616 or 617 would be much too heavy for use as a prime mover.

There are dozens of small industrial diesels or gassers out there that be better suited to the application than a MBZ automobile engine. A small Deutz would be neat...no cooling system.

What sort of brakes does the loco/train have?

While I was looking forward to your 616/617/603 conversion, it's still very cool to see it under its own power nonetheless!

That's freakin' cool! I'd LOVE to have something like that to cruise around the yard in!

I'd love to have a 15" park RR out here at the farm. Came across one for sale at Queen Wilhelmina state park in AR a couple of years ago...mile of rail, 3-4 switches, loco and 4-5 cars for something like $34k.

Like I need another project...
