Poor guy. You don't want to mock the dead but you have to wonder why someone would press on, after an uncertain turn, and on an unpaved road after dark, for 20 miles.

Chretien's son Raymond said his parents, who were en route to a trade show in Las Vegas, were navigating with a map and GPS unit, but were unaware of their mistake because of the darkness.

To a certain extent I can understand how they did that. There are parts of this state where you can go miles without seeing any sign of humanity (or water), not to mention you'll often times run into very rough difficult terrain before encountering habitation when traveling in a randomly selected direction. What I don't understand is why they didn't just turn around and go back the way they came when they realized they were lost. Ending up by a creek was a stroke of luck. In the 19th century it was pretty common for people and animals to perish in the desert east of what is now Fernley along the current I80 corridor.

20 miles isn't that far, heck I ran 8 today, why didn't they just retrace their steps?
Even if on the way back the road forked they should be able to follow the tracks they made coming in.

When I was in my late teens/early 20's I did a bit of outward bound survival training.
As exercises we used to get dropped off in the bush, have to survive on the land for a couple of days (up to a week depending on the task) & then find our way out. We had no maps & GPS had not even been heard of. I did a couple of these exercises in Borneo in Indonesia as well. We were in groups of 5 or 6. Some of the others in the groups looked like trainee mercenaries, we knew not to ask questions. It was a great thing, many of the skills learned I still use today.

That sounds like it would be interesting.
Although my idea of challenging survival is having to endure a casino not having my Vodka or Scotch of choice!  I don't know I hope more of this story comes out, I just don't see how they could get in so much trouble on a logging road. Its not like their wasn't a path to follow, unless the van had only a gallon of gas left in it, it should have been able to turn around and drive the 20 miles back.

There was mention of being stuck in the mud in one of the links I found. It's an unusual name - lot of hits on the story. But yeah, 20 miles to walk out? Makes you wonder but there's probably factors we're not aware of.

I really liked the comments on another article about this story. People were saying that the old lady must have eaten her husband, Donner party style. There's no way they had enough "nuts and fruit" in the car to sustain even one person for that long.
