I use my Nokia N8, life time free navigation and updates from Nokia, turn by turn voice guide, 3D or regular (flat screen) maps, points of interest, favorites etc....excellent.

It's a moving target, Kerry. It's like pursuing the latest PC. I use a Garmin 540 in the airplane (I think it's a 540). It clamps to the yoke and is easy to see, keeps trackfiles, easy to search through menus and yet doesn't get in the way. I also have airports database and weather info served. I haven;t used it in a boat but if I were going to look for a quality device with lots of options, I'd look there first.

Somewhat related, I just got Trimble GNSS RTK GPS's & scanner total station for work. You want accuracy? I got it!

My wife gave me a Tom Tom for Christmas a few years ago and it's great. Since I got my IPhone, however, it's just setting in the drawer with the batteries going bad.

I also have an $80 per year subscription to a product called Foreflight that is absolutely amazing. Among unbelievable flight planning capabilities it acts as an in flight GPS system. It's unbelievable.

With that said...

Go for a Garmin Nuvi. Simple, no one wants to steal it, it talks to you or you can mute it (unlike significant others) and it only does what it's programmed to do.

Unless you live in a constantly developing area, the maps are as accurate as your own eyes...they just don't tell you, all the time, when there are "immediate detours" unless you're on some major thoroughfare/highway. And potholes are your responsibility

These things are intended to get you to point "B" from point "A" - not to hold your hand and steer the car for you.

And it beats having to fold up the "old ones" and get it, somehow, back into the glove compartment!

The drawback? You can't use it to wipe your bum like the "old ones" if you get into a "pinch" (Pun intended!)...
Jim,...... he's dead. He's dead Jim.....
