Get a Garmin, I like the new 5in Nuvi the bigger screens are so much nicer.

You can get them with lifetime map and traffic updates now too.

I'm playing with a 1490T I borrowed from my uncle, compared to my old 340 its pretty nice and smart. IMHO its better than the GPS's they put in the new Mercedes since its not German it doesn't want to always take me to Warsaw!

I'm thinking about replacing my old 340 with a new voice command one this year.

Being able to add addresses in without having to take my hands off the wheel or look at it to much is a very nice feature.

I also use my iPhone with the "Navigon" app. The app was something like $50-60 and I'm always going to have the phone with me anyway. I have copies of the app on my wife's and daughter's iPhones for no additional cost. I have phone cradles installed in the cars anyway, and I'm not about to leave my phone unattended in the car because it's always with me.

yes but it $25 on top of $50 times 2 since I would have to get it for my wife too. I just dont want a car payment for using internet on the go which I never need anyway. besides. even a really nice GPS is paid back the first year at $25/mth

I have a smartphone Droid (optimus V) that tjts1 probably has from Virgin Mobile. $25/mo.- no contract.

Data is unlimited, but minutes are limited ( but there are workarounds, as he says).

Google has Navigate for free, which has spoken turn indicators. It also works when you give it voice commands like "Navigate to 1213 Main Street, Podunk, Oklahoma".

It's hard to see why you need a GPS now. I never bought one, and I don't need it now. Of course, if you JUST want it for GPS, it's not worth it, but if you want a phone, GPS, wifi hotspot, camera, can opener....

Yup, thats the one. Very happy with it. The battery life is less than stellar but I've found a few work arounds.
The shopsavvy and gas buddy apps have saved me more than $25 in the last month so the phone is paying for itself. Now that the carriers are pushing 4G phones in a big way, 3G phones are getting stupid cheap. I'll move on to a 4G when the price comes down a lot.

Mio

Well, I have a Mio. I can heartily recommend that you buy some brand other than the Mio, if mine is any indication.

I have a nuvi 1300 Garmin with lifetime maps it was around 138.00.
Works great easy to use. If I had it to do over I would have upgraded to the one with bluetooth. That way you can use it for your hands free phone calls. That is a nice option with older vehicles.

Is this info still current? $25/mo seems really low. What's the catch? Can you make Skype calls on 3G or is it WIFI only? Virgin is owned by Sprint?

Its $35/month for the same plan to new customers. Existing customers get to keep the $25/mo rate even if you change phones. Yes you can make Skype calls in both 3G and wifi. I use skype for most of my outgoing calls. The only catch I can think of is the phone won't tether unless you root the phone. Not sure who owns virgin but they use Sprint's CDMA network. Coverage is excellent, certainly better than ATT.

On the plus side, the phone has gotten cheaper. I picked up a second Optimus V for $99 a couple of weeks ago. Check Best Buy's web site on the weekends for sales. I ordered it online and picked it up in store an hour later.

If it is your personal cellphone, wouldn't you take it with you when you leave the car?

I have to agree. I got a Droid Incredible back in February. Not the newest but it was a 'refurbished" special from Verizon. Up to that point, we had a Tom Tom in the ex's car - which he go in the "divorce" lol - and I used VZ Navigator on my phone when I needed it, at a cost of $10 a month on my wireless bill. With the Droid having Google Maps - yes I have to pay $30 a month for the unlimited data package, but gave up having to pay the $10 for the Navigator. The Google Nav got even better with an update a few months ago that provides the Google Earth street view of your destination as you roll up on it. Very cool..

What's the best handheld mapping GPS which would work on water with charts and for hiking on land? The Garmin I use in my car is useless for hiking since the battery life is so short.

With that said...

Go for a Garmin Nuvi. Simple, no one wants to steal it, it talks to you or you can mute it (unlike significant others) and it only does what it's programmed to do.

Unless you live in a constantly developing area, the maps are as accurate as your own eyes...they just don't tell you, all the time, when there are "immediate detours" unless you're on some major thoroughfare/highway. And potholes are your responsibility

These things are intended to get you to point "B" from point "A" - not to hold your hand and steer the car for you.

And it beats having to fold up the "old ones" and get it, somehow, back into the glove compartment!

The drawback? You can't use it to wipe your bum like the "old ones" if you get into a "pinch" (Pun intended!)...
