lets talk Duramax

Yep the dodge is also one of my fav's
The ford power strokes-- if you cant put yourself in one if you desired , you might as well just hang it up and commit suicide for being a total failure.

The duramax-- if you start searching There appears to be a
few screamin deals--like an 02 in Shreveport for $4500. Do your due dilligance and you learn about the bum injectors and also headgaskest on the early ones, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to touch one under 2006. the 01-4 are loud, They say you can swap in thrd gen injectors and get around that problem--but what else is gonna go wrong next?

I think $2k. I will let him fill you in with more details, but it seems to be a very good deal.

I don't really get most duramax owners to be honest. Unless they're pulling 6k+ loads regularly they can get by extremely well with the invincible 6.0 liter Vortec. I think you don't have to worry about piston slap after 2000; I see alot North of 200k and running like new. The same could be said for the older 5.7 vortec but there's a huge power difference (260ish vs 320ish if I recall correctly). The LT/LS engines are so good I wouldn't even bother with the diesels.

No. A 98.5-02 Cummins is loud. Any Duramax is quiet in comparison.

I spent a few months in '09 working in a shop that serviced a fleet which included rather a lot of Duramaxes. I like the engine a lot, but I don't really care for the truck it comes in.

The price difference of gasoline and diesel being what it is (30-50 cents a gallon) it doesn't make a huge difference. Then there's the premium price diesel trucks sell for and you're in the hole.

Don't know how it happened during this price spike but diesel around me has been cheaper than gas, at least 20 or 30 cents a gallon.

During the 2008 price spike, diesel usually ran $1.00 more per gallon.

Well, those were the prices as of this morning anyway.

The U.S. market went to the common rail in '03.

I don't know what a diesel p'up will average, but for comparison purposes we've got a 2wd '04 Silverado 2500HD with the 6.0L gasser that's averaged 13.88 mpg (mixed driving and about 60% unloaded/40% loaded near capacity) over 275,000 miles vs. our '96 E-350, probably the same weight as a pickup, with the first generation Powerstroke that's averaged 17.56 mpg (roughly the same conditions as the Silverado) over 249,000. I contemplated replacing the 6.0 2500 with a Duramax but really can't financially justify the $8000 premium that comes with it since you're then paying for the Allison transmission as well.

As much as I like oil burners, it takes a long time to recoup the additional cost. If you're routinely towing near capacity it probably makes sense, though.

We've been through every domestic make in our company's 119 years, they each make decent trucks and they've each made duds. We had Fords for 20 years and Dodges for the 20 years prior. I've been on a Chevy kick for the past 8, for no other reason than the Ford dealer was bought and the new ownership/service sucked, and have been pretty pleased with the results.

Part of the problem with domestics is there seems to be a good amount of luck involved. How else do you explain a '92 Ford N/A 7.3L that's still running strong (should have succumbed to cavitation damage at least a decade ago) or two '04 Colorado's that have been trouble free for 200K+ miles (generally not reviewed well)? KNOCK ON WOOD!
