Its been done.
There is a movie, aired on sundance or IFC or some other "artsy" venue. Done in a faux-documentary style, complete with scratchy B&W film clips.

Harry Turtledove has written several novels from the viewpoint of a two-state America (CSA and USA). All the usual characters are there, albeit in different roles. The prose is a little stilted, but Turtledove holds a PhD in history and his scenarios are fairly plausible.
