California To Collect Internet Sales Tax

There are now seven states that have state tax collection laws on net sales.

NY, NC, RI, CT, AR, IL and now CA

Amazon Ditches 10,000 California Affiliate Sellers, Won't Collect Taxes for California

A company spokesman declined to say whether Amazon would file a lawsuit challenging California as it did in New York state, which passed a similar statute in 2008. The New York complaint, which was based on the interstate commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution, failed in the trial court and is now being appealed.

Meanwhile, another big Internet retailer, Salt Lake City-based Overstock.com, said Wednesday that it is ending "the services of its California-based Internet advertising affiliates."

CA is a bellweather state. The rest of the states are not far behind.

So is this just for sales to buyers in California -- or everywhere?

The real systems are gonna start coming back--bartering Skills, etc.

So wait......... Does this mean all internet retailers will collect CA sales tax or just the ones with an affiliate in CA?

Does Amazon cutting all ties to CA making it outside of CA mean if I buy something its still tax free? Will I have to pay tax on parts from Fastlane?

As with most laws in CA I'm confused.

As far as California is concerned, you have always owed them "use tax" for things you purchased from out of state, and for which the seller did not collect CA sales tax.

Right now it's just the ones with an affiliate, but that will just be the first step towards taxing any and all out-of-state sales.

CT has a form that you fill out when paying your income taxes on which you can calculate your unreported Internet and out-of-state purchases. Given their insatiable desire for tax money, I'd be shocked if CA didn't have a similar policy but maybe they don't.

Edit: Eskimo answered my non-question.

I see California's brilliant legislature is trying to drive away even more jobs. I expect Amazon to shut down its offices in Cupertino shortly.

Yes.
This is an excellent plan to get more money into the state's wallet (Gov. Browns Goal) so the budget can be balanced.

This is also an excellent way to hurt the economy in this state.

Hint to Gov. Brown, a stronger economy will pay more taxes.

no, but Amazon pulling out of CA might hurt us.

The way the CA tax structure is setup I think loosing the income tax collected when Amazon leaves would out way the taxes gained by taxing their product.

One of the reasons CA in this mess is because to many large companies have left the state taking their jobs, thus the income tax, with them.

So, the state's economy must have been humming right along before yesterday?
