Around here in the NYC area, I have noticed many gasoline stations charging different prices for gas depending on what method payment you use. Generally speaking, if you pay with Cash then you pay less. If you pay with a Debit or Credit card you then have to pay as much as 10 cents more! This really bothers me and I wonder if this is illegal? Anyone else in other states have this going on?

Gas isn't really a problem for my family, our shop is about 1 mile from the house and we can get anything we need within a 2 mile drive.

Back when the 560SL and 560SEL were new, the price of fuel was NOT a concern to these owners. They were gas guzzlers. You practically had to own a fuel refinery to run one. In fact, many owners DID. ![]() As to your question: Today, the same scheme of dual pricing for cash and credit purchase of gasoline obtains exactly the same in California as you have described it in NY. As one multiple Mercedes Benz owner to another, when buying gas, I strongly urge you to just put it on plastic and forget about it. the V8 560 engines all drink the best and most costly Persian Perrier anyway: 91 octane "Premium".

well then go to wal-mart and get a wal-mart card and charge away as they offer a 10 cent discount at the murphy's stations if you use their card.

If it encourages people to pay cash, thus f***ing the banksters out of their credit card commission fees, good! Don't occupy Wall Street. Starve the place out, and watch them squeal like stuck pigs.
PS - if you can't afford to pay cold hard cash, you just can't afford it. PPS - no Murphy's gas in NYC or NJ, as far as I know. |

Debit card is the same as cash and credit card doesn't mean an issue unless you are like the govt and keep upping your credit card limit to keep spending so the answer is "It depends". If you don't like where you are and want to find the pig to starve out that is to blame, look in the bathroom mirror and you will find him

Undeserved? They provide a convenience so you don't carry around all kinds of cash. Here is an idea. Why don't YOU provide us a debit card or credit card and NOT charge those fees? I don't see you offering us a better deal with the same convenience. Oh, that's right. You don't have the money and ability to do so. Never mind.

I don't see cash as terribly inconvenient, only a slight inconvenience. I consider the gas stations that pass on the lower cost of selling gas for cash as providing a valuable service. Don't understand why people are b*tching about that fact, that they have to pay 10¢ extra per gallon for a bit of convenience. Don't like it? Pay cash, as I do.
The stockholders? Mostly average people, directly or otherwise. I'd rather run my own business as I see fit, than have a pack of idiots like the average American as my "boss." The guy on Main Street can own enough to be comfortable for the rest of his life. Beyond that, why is more money needed? |

A lot of people DON'T like carrying around huge wads of cash with them to pay for everything and use credit cards instead.
I guess some people disdain credit credit cards because of lack of self control, or their credit is too awful to ever get one. Or are like my brother, who at the age of 60 has never had one, and never tried to rent a hotel room, ride on an airliner, or rent an automobile, in his entire life. But is nonetheless very sucessful in the business he owns; and he owns his own house, and except for his mortgage, he is 100% debt free. But he always has a huge pile of cash with him in his wallet.

)A lot of places in NY are generally reluctant to accept plastic or have minimums, so cash is always good to have around. PS - your brother sounds like an awesome guy. If more Americans were like him, this country wouldn't be in the toilet that it's been in for the past 10 years. |

Guess it depends on where you live. I have had many rooms at hotels were I paid cash, flown plenty of times with cash and rented a couple cars with cash. Never needed a car for any of those.

If they do, it is an option. Never heard of the saying "Having your cake and eat it"? I want to be rich but I don't want to work for it. Next best thing? ***** at the guy who made it. Wow! You are good. You don't run your business as you see fit. That is, unless you can buy and sell to yourself or you are the only one that can make a product that nobody can come close to. You serve your customer, whomever it is or they will find someone else that will. I'm a night owl. I want to open my shop between midnight and 6 am only. I don't care if you want a burger. I sell squid sandwiches only. Well, I can do that but that does no mean the customer has to comply. If they are so average, show us you can be better instead of a being the proverbial Fox in Aesop's fable. The Fox and the Grapes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You don't NEED a card, but you can generally get plane tickets more cheaply online than at the airline office, and cards are useful so that you don't need to pay a car or hotel deposit "up front" and lose use of the cash until you get it back. Float.
