^ No I stopped it. It's just surging like crazy and won't build good pressure. When I let go of the trigger it attempts to build up but runs like crap. I might try a new carb.

good luck with that.
it sounds to me like the pump might be shot which is probably why it was sold to you cheap.

^You're probably right. There is no harm running the engine without the pump attached since it does have a flywheel, correct?
Oh and a long time ago I used to fly RC airplanes and I converted a Ryobi 31cc for RC use. It worked pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6eQ-PmQEUQ |

Later carbs. on this engine do not have an adjustable idle circuit. If it won't respond to cleaning, it's NG. The good news is that these carbs. are relatively cheap- it doesn't pay to fool with them if you can't make a quick repair.

I tried a couple of different things today and have come to a conclusion that the carb AND pump need to be replaced. Great.
I took the pump off and it ran better, but still surged violently like before. I tried a different carb off of my lawnmower and it ran a LOT better, but still backfired a little bit. Not sure what the issue is with that. I put the pump back on and hooked a hose up to it and got zero pressure except for what was coming out of the hose. Sooooo it looks like I need a new carb and pump. Maybe I'll just build a damn gokart. |

sounds like a good idea!

A vertical shaft engine and go-karts are mutually exclusive. Remove the outlet fitting from the pump and see what the unloader valve is doing. You have nothing to lose at this point.

the carb on the briggs quantums are usually pretty tough. i doubt if you need a new carb. the surging (or hunting) is usually caused by an air leak via a gasket.
if you do determine that you need a new carb, just let me know and i'll send you a good used one.

benhogan,
Any Kohler knowledge? I have one of the infamous KT 19 ( 9 1/2 HP) ![]() I have not yet torn it down, but I suspect I will need a rod and piston. Hopefully, there is not a hole in the crankcase.

normally when a small engine needs something that 'deep' into it, i just replace the engine.

But in any case, see what a new replacement costs vs, the repairs. Depending on extent, new might be economically a better choice.

That Kohler is north of $2000. Some guy makes a re-power using a B&S Vanguard and all the bits to make it plug and play for by Cub--that is still about $1700 IIRC.

I stand corrected. I am not familiar with that Kohler motor.
I deal mostly in <6.5Hp Briggs, Honda and Tecumseh motors.

I'm going to replace the rubber bits, as I feel those might be letting air in. I'm also going to soak it carb cleaner instead of the spray type. If that fails I'll let you know benhogan.
Apparently the bowtie pump on these is a pos, but there are replacements available. I might shoot for one of those. |
