It's roughly on a par with Tom Cruise's rant against psychiatrists based on his Scientology. If he were running for office, that rant would be fair game.

There is certainly some hypocrisy going on amongst Christian candidates, but that may well be another debate. Perhaps I chose my wording poorly.

In any case, I somehow doubt that MB was suggesting that she was inclined to have sex with any biblical characters, as OP seems to insinuate. I suppose I could be wrong.

EDIT: I would agree that much of her zealotry seems to be on-par with Tom Cruise's.

I agree that the relationship between sex and power in fundamentalist religion is not something just to be taken lightly. It's very significant and probably goes back to our primate past and the relationship between the alpha chimp and the chimpettes who are sexually attracted to his power. At some subconscious (maybe conscious for some) level, the fundamentalist pastor is a repetition of this pattern of the exercise of sexual power. It's not really a surprise, that when social conditions permit it, these kind of religious systems become polygamous, because ultimately, Bachmann does speak the truth, women ARE hot for God.

I'll agree, for the most part, but let's not forget that some members have openly mocked Islam (how many "meet your 72 virgins" comments can one guy read?). And I've seen Kerry and others challenge other religions as well, to be fair. Challenging is one thing... it's the petty mocking that I find distasteful. All you can do is ask/hope for better behavior.

You are free to believe that if you'd like. Nothing wrong with a mature discussion of the topic. However, are the insinuations of some in this thread necessary to make this argument? If not, what purpose do they serve (other than to offend some and generate a chuckle from the simple-minded)?

Also for the record, I'm not one who believes faith is a fool's errand or however you put it. I believe blind adherence to religious dogma very much IS however. Christian, Muslim, or The Church of Lloyd Bridges; anyone who believes their faith is superior to mine or anyone else's or is the only path to enlightenment is gonna be fair game in my book. Funny how those people often end up being Christian.

Agreed, to a point, but I take exception to the last line. Well, somewhat -- of COURSE they're often Christian; you live in a largely "Christian" country. Sure you'll conceded that you'd be whistling a different tune in Muslim- or Jewish-dominant (etc...) society, no?

Anyway, if offending many Christians because you think lowly of some is your thing, there's probably little I can say to convince you that you might win a wider audience (and even provoke some critical thinking) by taking a less inflammatory position. Carry on.

There's no doubt that being a non-Muslim in some Islamist countries is dangerous to one's existence, but proselytizing is not generally done by mainstream Muslims. Israel, while founded for Jews by Jews, obviously encourages that faith but I know of no requirement to sign up. No Muslims find their way out to my ranch to come through my gate and risk their necks with my livestock guardian dogs in order to point me down the correct path to salvation. Neither do any Jews, or Buddhists, or Sikhs or Jains or New Age Crystal gazers. Guess who does? Christians of one ilk or another. No, I seriously doubt I'd be singing a different tune. Proselytization and spreading the news that Jesus Christ is the only salvation and fiery retribution awaits those who do not heed the call is, in my experience, a uniquely Christian trait. If this is perceived as an inflammatory position, it just may be that the inflammation is caused by the sting of truth.
