Not sure that follows.
What is 'Sharia Law'?
Sharia Law is the law of the Religion of Islam. The 'Shari'a' Law regulates the 'Path' Muslims should follow if they are to lead good lives.
Shari'a Law regulates not only human relationships between individuals, like other legal systems.
It also regulates human relationships with God.
Therefore, the Shari'a is much more than a law as Westeners know it. It is an entire way of life for Muslims.

The recent coming out by U.S. politicians/media opposing Shari'a Law, and framing their stance as "Muslims want to take over the world", overlooks the fact that Shari'a Law for Muslims would only be in place to govern marriage and divorce- not to supercede the Constitutional/State laws of the western world.

It isn't Shari'a law does not originate with the Koran per se, but is created by humans who interpreted the law to meet their own ends.

There are a number of reasons why Islam works so well in tribal countries, vice diverse secular ones. The main reason is that tribal leaders like to make theuir tribe members believe that the tribal power is analogous to Mohammed's power as a leader of the armies of Allah.

In the Jewish faith, it's like the difference between the Ten COMMANDMENTS and the 617 Jewish dietary kosher REGULATIONS.

People always try to make their stuff more legitimate if they feel it lacks undiputed authority.

Why do we laugh at all? It's got to be the same reason why America's Funniest Videos was a no-brainer for success once camcorders became widespread enough to record infinite footage of life's everyday idiocies and misfortunes.

Here's an interesting piece on Bachmann's views on husbands and wives:

Yeah, that's a tricky one. You might could make the case that someone in a cult no longer has free choice.

Or the case that none of us ultimately have free choice anyway. I don't see any difference between religious beliefs, political beliefs, scientific beliefs or moral beliefs. All those beliefs in my own mind are subject to reason and criticism, none of them are immune from social discussion. David Brooks had a column this week about the inability of young people to think and discuss moral issues. I think part of that problem is the privatization of beliefs like that, consigning them to the realm of arbitrary choice immune from rational thought and discussion. I understand why that kind of thing happens but I don't think it's good for individuals or society.

I understand and agree, but I would add that it's somewhat ironic that we're lamenting the fact that some beliefs are insulated from rational (or, I'd suggest the word "mature") discussion given the opening posts in this thread. Why would I voluntarily trot my beliefs out to an audience such as this?

EDIT: I hasten to add that I would agree too few adequately investigate their beliefs. I'm as guilty of this as the next person, but I do try. Picked up "Jesus, Interrupted" last week and will be working my way through that as time permits, for instance.

That's a standard that I'm very unlikely ever to meet, so I tried to avoid it.
