So, I accepted a new job
Disney World called me yesterday and offered me a job as a photo pass photographer. I was in the middle of a group study session / homework help thing and asked if I could call back. I called back today and accepted the job.
I will be leaving my job of 5 years in the grocery store. I am going to see if I can stay on and just work once a month just in case something doesn't work out at Disney. Having 5 years at the grocery store means nothing, my "seniority" means nothing, I do not get retail bonuses, health insurance, free stock given to me, or any of the perks that I previous received when the requirements to get them were attainable. Now a part time employee must work 1500 hours a year or 29 hours a week to get that. It was easier to get them when it was just 1000 hours a year. I will be taking a pay cut of $.50 but the benefits and great benefits they are make up for it. I had listed out the pro's and con's of the job and the pro's far out weighed the cons. Frankly I'm just tired of working in a grocery store that I do not want a future in. Sure they give me tuition reimbursement but I'm not getting much this year since I've almost hit the cap for the year. As well as the fact that I do not enjoy selling fish and meat all day. I do not enjoy the uneven share of work that I have been given. I pretty much do my assistant managers job, with the exception of cut meat and sit in the manager meetings and not get paid as such. The last go around of raises I got the minimum of $.15... which is the minimum they can give with the max being your positions cap. I'm tired of it, I work hard, get the job done in a safe manner, and ensure the product is of superb quality.... yet I get nothing in return from my managers. Sure a paycheck but no recognition. Just another cog in the corporate wheel. That may be the same at Disney but I feel as if my job there would be more enjoyable than sitting in the cold all day, surrounded by cold animal parts and blood. Slapping labels on to wrapped packages of dead animal parts, not being able to make someones day brighter and more enjoyable when I hand them their ground meat for their dinner. I try and make the job fun but that can get me in trouble. I'll leave on good terms (and try and work one day a month) that way I can always come back. I have 175 shares of stock the company gave me, which are mine to keep or to sell. But I'm just going to leave them where they sit and just collect dividends off them. The stock has split in the past and it may do so in the future. Anyways I'm rambling. Tomorrow morning I go do paperwork, get my Disney ID, and official name tag. I'm very excited to be doing this. |

Sounds like you were ready for the change. Congrats! I have to imagine a job at Disney is a million times more enjoyable (just in terms of the people you interact with) than any retail situation.

disney has a great potential for opportunity and the managers wont be trying to keep you down, in small ponds managers are always afaid the hard worker is going to take their job, in large companies like Disney having good people under you reflects well on managers so they will likely let you climb as fast as you are capable. good luck, id love to be there as a ride engineer......

Dang it, Chad beat me to it!
Congrats, Joe! It was definitely time. Enjoying your job takes a lot of the "work" out of it.

I'm so nervous. As soon as I told my managers at work the grocery store suddenly became weird feeling and alien to me. Like it knows I am leaving.

Whenever I have started a new job the first day at the new job was always the most nervous day.
You'll be fine Don. The key to it is to have a good attitude.

why is that best? if you have no ambition or skills to contribute then its better to fly low, if you want a career of satisfying work and no ceiling then a small pond can be outgrown very fast and then after 20 years you lose your cush job to a son or nephew, no thanks

I cant remember if you have already graduated, but heres a tidbit for you. the last time you walk out of the store you will have this feeling of release, all the pressures and trivialities of that job will lift off your shoulders and you will feel suddenly free and there will be a feeling of personal growth and expanded horizons. Yopu will feel this after your last college test as well. never be afraid of change embrace it and make it work for you. I was a contract engineer for 12 years with 6 different jobs and it was the best time of my life professionally and in the area of personal growth
