Old but funny joke.
I would argue the worst Navy disaster was the Indianapolis, what a crime that was. They even made it worse by sticking it on Captain McVay, causing him to commit suicide in great dishonor.

That's what I thought too. I have a private pilots license and the examiner, Mel Jacobs, was a survivor of that, I guess that sort of turned him on to flying somehow, being rescued by a PBY.
In general I thought the worst disaster was the typhoon they had out in the Pacific around that same time frame. But for a single ship I think it's the Indy.

Forgotten.
USS Juneau CL-52
November 14, 1942 Sunk off Guadalcanal Crew of 775. Torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-26 & sank in 20 seconds. 100+ men went into the water as the cruisers USS Helena and San Francisco steamed away. 10 men rescued eight days later. 10. Among the lost crewmen were the 5 Sullivan brothers. Article about the last survivor. Last sailor of WWII ship Iron Bottom Sound was the watery tomb for many, many sailors in 1942-43. |

I worked for an old mustang lieutenant who acted as though running out of coffee was the worst naval disaster possible.
