I had read this as a joke before (possibly with a different ship) but was a funny video to see, thanks for the link!

Old but funny joke.

I would argue the worst Navy disaster was the Indianapolis, what a crime that was.

They even made it worse by sticking it on Captain McVay, causing him to commit suicide in great dishonor.

That's what I thought too. I have a private pilots license and the examiner, Mel Jacobs, was a survivor of that, I guess that sort of turned him on to flying somehow, being rescued by a PBY.

In general I thought the worst disaster was the typhoon they had out in the Pacific around that same time frame. But for a single ship I think it's the Indy.

Forgotten.

USS Juneau CL-52
November 14, 1942
Sunk off Guadalcanal

Crew of 775. Torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-26 & sank in 20 seconds. 100+ men went into the water as the cruisers USS Helena and San Francisco steamed away. 10 men rescued eight days later. 10.
Among the lost crewmen were the 5 Sullivan brothers.

Article about the last survivor.
Last sailor of WWII ship

Iron Bottom Sound was the watery tomb for many, many sailors in 1942-43.

I worked for an old mustang lieutenant who acted as though running out of coffee was the worst naval disaster possible.
