That's untrue in certain areas of the US where unemployment and poverty run high. In such areas the wage for entry level brainless jobs are right at minimum wage.

What did you expect? If it is a brainless job, why should I pay more than it is worth? When you consider a car repair, do you normally spend $5000 to fix up a $500 beater? You pay into it as much as it is worth. That is why we have a lot of Craig'slist ads that tell us how much a person spent on a project car with no real collectable value except to them and want to get at least that back.

I expect it should pay less than minimum wage. In places where homes are $30,000, yeah, the local economy should probably dictate the price of labor.

Unfortunately the cost of food and gasoline doesn't fluctuate that much.

Can't ask to have it both ways. Let the market decide. Also should let the recipient decide if he/she wants to stay that way and live from paycheck to paycheck or improve their situation. I didn't like having to be paid peanuts and work crap jobs so I did something about it. OTOH, if you are happy with that lifestyle, so be it. Those that can, rise above the level. Those that cannot and/or will not are setting an example of what not to be.

Jap Crap has certainly elevated itself to "I want to be bigger than GM" from the despised junk it used to make. Let the fittest survive. Those that cannot and/or will not adapt can either die out or be an example for kids so they can say "I don't want to end up like that, what must I do?".

And why not? If rural communities had equal access to the marketplace they would fair a lot better. The first thing I would do is rewrite the laws that apply to small business. Compliance costs a small business signficantly more as a percentage of their revenues compared to large businesses. It just chokes the life out of communities.

Why? Because it is a silly game. Picking winners, giving handicaps, etc, etc. Even if we leveled everything today, it will still come back to what we had. Why? Because we should let it play out the way it plays out instead of trying to boost this, handicap that. Nature does not give handicaps or boost certain target groups. Those that cannot survive, do not. There is no 100 yard handicap for the slower fawn when the predator arrives. You cannot survive, you do not. The weak get picked off while the strong survive. Sure, sometimes luck comes into play but luck eventually runs out.

the employer will pay the employee just enough where they don't quit.

if the employee is generally "happy" with his pay then he is overpaid.

if the employee is totally "disgusted" with his pay then he is about to quit

Outside of slavery (economic or otherwise), this is the unspoken truth.

As a former employer myself, I always paid a good wage for the job, a happy employee is a productive employee.

That applies to some employers, no doubt, but not to all.

I've hired lots of employees who weren't worth $9 an hour. If that becomes Texas min wage, I'd have to rethink my hiring process.

$9 an hour for some low level, no skill, burger flipping job, is ridiculous. I made $10.30 an hour in the meat dept in a grocery store. But that was only because I had been there for a while, worked hard, did everything I could to do the best. If some schlub gets hired to bag groceries at $9 an hour I'd be pissed.

Please tell me that you fired them quickly. Either fire them "chinese style" (up against the wall) or terminate their employment.

Of course if he is paid $9/hr he costs the employer close to $20 to $25 an hour(depending on the state).
