A "New" Truck

These things are scarce as hen's teeth around here and when you find one priced reasonably it's because some teenager owned it last and thrashed it climbing rocks and mud-bogging. I've been casually looking for a year or more.

1 owner 93
base model. Power NOTHING, 22RE 5spd. Stereo and AC ..simple as pie
220K miles but upper engine redone 5K ago. New head, valves, etc. No leaks, good power
records since new. Meticulous service. Every oil change is documented.
paint is oxidized, like I care.
I haven't sorted it yet so it'll be staying on the ranch till I trust it.
I owned an 86 a long time ago and have always missed it. Although 8 years newer, this one doesn't appear to be remarkably different.

So, can anyone recommend a forum that is populated by more, how to say it delicately, mature enthusiasts?

I can't recommend a forum, but I know there are some good ones. My wife ran the wheels off of a '98 4 Runner. It was probably the most trouble free vehicle we ever owned. In 200,000 miles the ONLY repair was a starter. Everything else I did was strictly preventive maintenance. Unfortunately it had a timing belt, so that was a little extra maintenance.

The ones like yours with a timing chain are top notch in the reliability area. Looks? IMHO not good. Trim, paint, etc.? Less than optimum. The important thing is that they will keep on going like the Energizer Bunny.

Looks like the perfect ranch vehicle to me! AC, cloth and nothing else. Is that carpet (hard to tell on my crappy, dust-covered screen )? If so, ditch it for rubber then you can just hose it out.

They are reliable as heck but it has always amazed me at how well they hold their value. I suppose, like you said, it's the lift-and-beat-on crowd that keeps the prices high.

Yeah, it won't pull a horse trailer but I have my Ford for that. It's carpet sadly. Maybe I'll take it out. I'll probably also take the cap off and find a cage or rack for it. A shell doesn't really fit my purposes. The 4x versions seem to bottom out around 2K no matter what condition they're in or how many miles they have. Good ones are rarely for sale in these parts although you see them on the road all the time. I'm hoping motors are still as cheap to replace as they used to be. I remember putting a reman 22RE in my 86 for about 1500 dollars including labor and a 4 year warranty. That was 20 years ago though, so I'm sure it's gone up some.

It's a toyota pickup, they're all over phoenix, mostly jacked up and stupid looking driven by DBs with lots of tatoos and guaged ears. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

They can be had around here, but prices are never reasonable. Top Gear tried to kill a diesel one a few years ago and couldn't. A friend of mine bought one new in the early 90's and still has it. It's still running perfectly with no major work.

Be very wary of rust! They recalled a bunch of older toyota trucks due to some design flaw that made them rust out a few years back. Up here in the rust belt they are VERY hard to find clean, most are beyond repair (though they run fine usually)

Rust is not a factor in most parts of texafornia--cept east/south of dallas , or the left coast.
Nice score.

Zero rust, it's a CA truck since new, in AZ 4 years.

Hilux? I guess so, I've read they still call them that in other countries but don't believe they've been called that in the U.S. since the 70s or 80s. My 86 didn't say Hilux on it anywhere.
Wish I could get my hands on a diesel one, but they are almost non-existent.

One of the best little trucks ever built in my opinion. Does the a/c work? It may take r12. Don't remember right off the top of my head.
