Medicine is not a perfect answer. It is like electing a leader. You pick the Lessor Of Two Evils. Weigh out the Risk vs Rewards thing. In my case, when I get a cold, I am down for a bit and if I don't recover, I get asthmatic bronchitis and then go on to pneumonia. At which time, I have to get IV drugs since I cannot keep anything down, even water. Weighed against that, I would say that the price of a few days of not feeling good are fine.

The problem is that we want the goodies from the vaccine but NOT any side effects. We need to realize that the NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free) principle is going to be in effect. A few days of discomfort AT A TIME OF YOUR CHOOSING or a cold at an inconvenient time. We want a free lunch. Get a shot, ZERO chance of side effects, full protection and maybe fries with that. Not happening.

My wife and kids all got it (my 9yoS with Ds does have a weaker immune system so it's almost a must-do) as they have the past 7-8 years, without any side effects. I don't usually get it, because I rarely get sick, but did last year because my wife, the pediatrician and pharmacist all had a bet going that I wouldn't get the shot. So I did it out of spite.

I haven't decided about this year yet. Our insurance carrier covers it completely so I might.

I told my boss's boss. (She's easy to shoot the breeze with)

She was defensive about it. Said there's no way I could get a rxn unless I was allergic to eggs. I told her it was psychosomatic and laughed, so did she.

Got mine 2 weeks ago and had a slight reaction (slight temp elevation and feeling NSG). Called the Doc and he said this was typical with this year's vaccine.

My wife abhors shots of all kinds and expects to get sick with a flu shot and low and behold, she always does. I think that has a lot to do with it. I get one every year, and don't get the flu. GBS? Gimme a break...

But is she good looking and easy? That is the main question.

What kind of eggs? Hers? Reminds me of the old joke where the guy asked the girl "How would you like your eggs tomorrow?". Her answer was "Fertilized".

Sorry, saw an opportunity and couldn't pass it up. My bad. Back to regular programming.

I got it. Always do now. Not interested in getting flu and working in schools, along with my wife means it's always around. Of course I wound up with a savage head cold about a week after the shot but that always happens to me every winter.

Me too... I don't get sick often..but just a regular cold seems for the last 12 years to automatically go to my lungs... took four months on five different antibiotics to stop it then... now when it goes there I know what to ask for.. knock on wood it still works like it should...
I had pneumonia when 12 and still have a scar on my lung which they ask about when doing an xray... do not want that again either... and I am around old people ( 85,88,88,92) in the family regularly... so I would not want to get and spread it to them...

The jokes in this thread have been very funny... good work guys....and I do believe in more cow bells...

In my case, once it starts as a cold or if I think I am getting a cold, I start the Advair since it takes time for a corticosteroid to work. Once the cough hits, I need Tussionex to stop that. If the cough keeps going, it will make me get sicker and sicker. Usually doctors like to give hydrocodone but those will make me throw up everything I have and have dry heaves.

I have a script for Advair, but only use it seasonally for allergic asthma, and only if It's a particularly bad allergy season. I never heard of it being used for a cold. Pretty creative, and risky unless you're diagnosed with asthma or COPD.

I use it because it (steroid) needs time to build up in the system and I know that I am going to get asthmatic bronchitis. If you used to see that progression 2 to 3 times every 3 months when you were a kid and you lived in a hot humid climate all year round, you get to know when you need it. I get it when the weather turns from spring to summer. The heat and humidity really brings it out. The progression is a cold, asthmatic bronchitis, pneumonia. Each part weakens the body more and more to line up for the next one.
