Federal workers earning double their private counterparts - USATODAY.com I wonder how they would fare if they actually had to compete in the free market? Your tax dollars at work.

Why are you mad? The government printed the money that it pays to its employees. If anything, its your own fault for deciding that money is worth anything. I don't get why anyone ever gets mad about government spending. Its all monopoly money!

[Public employee unions say the compensation gap reflects the increasingly high level of skill and education required for most federal jobs and the government contracting out lower-paid jobs to the private sector in recent years.
"The data are not useful for a direct public-private pay comparison," says Colleen Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union. Yes- I read the article. Looking at who said that the comparison is not useful says it all. While an education MAY be required for some government jobs, a "higher" level of skill certainly is not. BTW- what do you do for a living?

Burger King is considered private sector. The .gov does not have any comparable jobs, but, if you factor in the fact that the dish machine operator at Aramark still gets paid $7.65 to work in a .gov cafeteria the numbers might change a bit.

The government doesn't have any comparable jobs? There are government facilities everywhere that have cafeterias and food service workers. VA hospitals for example. Pay wise, their food service workers look like investment bankers compared to those working at Burger King. Check your facts before posting. I'll even help you with sources: usajobs.gov & usa-jobs.com

Hmm, I say Sodexho-Marriot by habit. In any case I'd say Sodexho and Aramark owned about half the US government foodservice contracts in 2003. (I consulted for them) It might have changed since then.

Most menial labor and service jobs in /gov are contract labor. Remember the whole Haliberton brouhaha? That company's subsidiary supplies services to the military overseas.
Let's say you are hired to clean portable toilets in Kandahar. How much compensation would it take? |

My wife is in Human Resources at a VA hospital where they are constantly hiring food service workers that work DIRECTLY for the VA. They also hire cleaning people and all sorts of other lower paying jobs. You can speculate all you want, but I know of what I speak on this subject.

So do I Larry, and in all fairness I pretty much was done with the industry in 2003. But I do know then that Sodexho had a BILLION bucks on the table at the time. Aramark wasn't far behind. That's a lot of money. What I don't know is what that was as a percentage of the total foodservice budget.
Edit: I found an article. Union: Rising costs built into $1.2 billion Marine Corps food contract -- GovExec.com $1.2 BILLION bucks. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
