Desktop PC config

Hi All,
To all computer enthusiasts:
my current P4 desktop PC is getting old, and am looking for a replacement.
Here's the new config that I'm considering >
- processor: Intel Core i7 2600K
- GeForce 1GB GTX... video card
- SSD(1): Crucial M4 128GB (boot drive)
- HDD(2): 1TB WD 'Black'
- 6GB RAM DDR3-1600
- main board ? & power supply ?
- Multicard reader frontside (SD & MicroSD)
- 4x USB 3.0 frontside + 8x USB 3.0 backside
- optical drive: blueRay DVD RW
- TV card analog
- earphone plugin frontside
- DVI + HDMI
- OS Windows 7

This config should be fine for the next 3-4 years, I think.
I don't do any heavy video/photo-editing etc, butmy 13-year old is loves gaming.
Any comments/suggestions ??

Thanks,
V.

Looks like a pretty decent setup, and I would imagine that it would be good for at least a couple of years of gaming, which is what tends to push the performance requirements the fastest.

For mainboards, I would get a z68 chipset board for the ssd caching and the possibility of using both the on board video encoding and your separate graphics card simultaneously (if you want to). I prefer boards from the major brands.

For power supply, I would get one of the 80 plus rated supplies, antec, seasonic, delta, are the ones that I looked at, enermax makes some good ones too. There are a couple of power supply calculators online that you can plug your system specs into and it spits out a recommended wattage. Consider adding a little bit (like 1-200 watts) for expansion and loss of efficiency with age, but remember that most PS's are only efficient when they are running at a certain load factor.

I would go ahead and get 8gb of ram, make sure you leave at least 2 slots open for another 8 in a couple years if you need it.

I've had bad experiences with some of the front panel card readers (durability and ground loop issues with the headphone jacks), but YMMV. Some cases probably come with built in card readers now.

Looks like a decent setup - I'm guessing you're going to build it yourself? I would make sure the MoBo you are going to get has the capacity for 8-16gb of RAM so you can upgrade in the future. Also, get a good PSU that can handle all that power sucking. It will last you at least 3-4 years. I built my PC about 7 years ago on about the same budget component-wise. Having only upgraded the GPU to a good NVidia card and thrown in an extra 4gb of ram (along with Win7), it still runs almost everything fine. The only thing that slows down is newer games on super high graphics (of course, to be expected) and when I'm doing music composition, I am beginning to run so many complex plugins it simply can't handle it. Other than that its been great...used it every day for the last 7 years. I'll probably upgrade in another year or two.

Hey, buy a Mac.

Sounds like a good setup, and as said before, look for a Z68 mobo.

Not sure I would go for a 6 core chip, most programs these days can only use up to two cores. I imagine a few would be able to use 4+ cores but I'd bet for the next couple years most of those extra cores would just sit idle.

From this month's MacWorld Spotlight column:

But secretly we knew that, for a lot of those friends and relatives, Macs were overkill. Why should anyone spend more than a thousand dollars on a device that they'd use only for emailing, Web browsing, and occasionally downloading photos, when a $300 PC would do the job more cheaply?
