I missed good opportunity to buy a .40 cal S&W pistol (asking $250). I had second thoughts about buying from 3rd party - especially someone I don't know. The guy posted his ad on local fishing forum - said that he had all of 'the paperwork'... I didn't think it was legal to buy from individuals, thought you had to purchase from licensed dealers?!

Depends on your state laws exclusively.
CA will certainly require an FFL to do a PPT (private party transfer) and the required handgun registration, HSC and 10 day quarantine until pick up.
$250 sounds like an ok price. Refer to your state laws for aquisition of firearms.

Yep. Depends on the state. AZ has no requirements for private party gun transactions. CO may be different. Check out local state laws.

Could have been a good deal, just make sure it wasn't shot to hell. When I briefly considered selling my FN49 I got a lot of trade offers for shot to hell Glock's and S&W MP's. No thanks.

Private purchase of a fire arm always carries some risk. make sure you see some good ID on the seller.

It was a Sigma S&W .40 cal. Guy wanted $250 for it - got it in like one day.... no problem.

I've asked on a local 4x4 Forum about private sales and have been told that it is legal and no paperwork is required.

IF I were to do it, I would be checking seller's ID and writing down the number for refernece, just in case.

One thing to consider when buying and selling a handgun from a third party is the location of the sale.

They have a gun, you have money. If they wish to meet in a private place you might consider changing the location to someplace a bit more public. A real seller will have no problem with this, nor will a real buyer.

I buy or sell a half dozen or so guns a year. Almost all from or to private parties. Never a problem. I do meet them in public areas though. A restaurant or something for lunch first.

Doubt it. People who want to buy a gun may already have several guns, and might be strapping one or two of them, which would tend to discourage such games.

That is a good point, but I like to have all my bases covered if possible. There is also the fact that as I get older I am not as fast as I used to be.

By the way, since we are talking about selling things.....

How do you know when a deal has been a good one? It is when both sides are happy with the deal. You might have just made 300% profit on the deal, but if the buyer is happy then everyone came out ahead.
