Driver was texting in Missouri traffic pileup - Yahoo! News

I almost got mowed down by a texting female driver while unloading a patient at the hospital! Almost everyday, I see texting drivers come perilously close to causing an accident.
Awhile back, a friend's daughter caused an accident while yakking on her cell phone. The other party's lawyer subpoenaed her cell phone records prior to settlement negotiations. A texter is as dangerous as a DUI driver. No wonder insurance rates are as high as they are. Those of us who try to drive responsibly are paying higher rates to subsidize the morons. The system is working. |

I believe the answer is a GPS robot control system placed in every vehicle which totally controls EVERYTHING (steering, speed and braking). No more texting, DUI, DWI, disabled driving accidents. Similar to a commercial airliner's autopilot, it would take the moron factor out of driving. |

Nothing like a Jeep Grand Cherokee on its roof to bring a smile to my face. Got tailgated within 5 feet by one of the DB's today..........he had to get there in a big hurry, of course. |

I was in small claims court this morning as the plaintiff for the DB who sideswiped the SD because she was in such a hurry. That Range Rover had 375hp and she used every single one to try to beat me into the right lane during an expressway merge (she was directly behind me). No witnesses. No police report. She claimed that I failed to see her in my blind spot. She was represented by the attorney hired by State Farm. The lower of the two estimates was $1700. We could settle for $850. or risk the trial and probability of returning at another date and killing another day. I took the $850. The DB won. A dash cam would have been worth another $850 in this case. I'm sure that plenty of folks get into such situations all the time and it only takes the DB to lie like a rug to mitigate the situation in a court of law. |
Teens are practicing their texting and navigational skills daily at the shopping malls. Ever walk behind them while shopping? :D

Pedestrian texting is becoming more of an issue, too.
More than once I've literally had to rely on the BAS to keep from killing people. Recently it was a couple, at night, both texting, wearing dark clothing, stepped from behind a car into the crosswalk right in front of me. I stopped less than a foot from hitting them. They just kind of glanced at me and kept walking and texting. Doubtless they had no idea how close they came to serious injury or death. I guess it's a good thing I was DRIVING and not TEXTING!!! |
This Just In . . . NTSB Want to Ban Hand Held Cell Phones While Driving
The new recommendation, if adopted by states, would outlaw non-emergency phone calls and texting by operators of every vehicle on the road. It would not apply to hand-free devices or to passengers. |
^^Finally some sanity....hands-free should go as well, but I don't know how it could be enforced. This will be hard enough.

Ever notice how when this topic comes up in conversation NOBODY admits to texting while driving and EVERYBODY tut-tuts about how stupid and dangerous it is?
I'm just glad my cell phone has a special feature. It's battery is always dead. |
I don't text and drive, ever. Don't answer email and have BT handsfree in all three cars. Use of mobile devices in vehicles was banned in Honolulu several years ago, so the practice just followed with the cars.

This is painful enough to read! I can't imagine what it must have been like to live through. People like this are out there. Glad you weren't hurt though. |

I don't text very much at all and can't remember ever doing it while driving. I went through the late eighties on through the early 2000's talking a LOT on the phone while driving though. I figured up one time that I have driven somewhere between 35,000 and 40,000 miles while actually on the phone. That's bad enough. Texting would be way more dangerous. |
