Interesting. Pretty funny in parts, but also true, to a certain extent. However I'm not down with the whole idea of the smaller, more intimate public space of the future. Such a utopian ideal always ends in slums.

Then again, we're seeing (in the US) urban blight in suburban areas with large quantities of foreclosures. Actually, newer housing projects, with medium height townhouses and mixed use are less likely to turn into slums than the old tower blocks -- the tower blocks were high, but they ghettoized the poor and were separate from any commercial areas. Sort of the opposite of suburbia, but not Kunstler's idea either.

And interestingly, the wealthy are increasingly drawn to areas which have that kind of public space. Think Manhattan or the better parts of Brooklyn (e.g. Fort Greene).

Yes. But I wasn't just referring to the US in this instance.

I'm not a fan of cardboard cut out suburbs, so appreciated much of the vid. Wife and I moved into the city and love it. Old houses, neighborhood hang outs, cool stores, cool neighbors, no HOAs... high taxes ugh

Depends on the city ... if you buy a house in Brooklyn without an HOA, taxes are generally on the order of $100-200/mo, whereas a much smaller apartment in Manhattan that's a co-op or condo (has an HOA), will have taxes on the order of $250+/mo.

The one place that "cookie cutter" buildings work is coastal California -- you have a bunch of towns that are sort of sprawled and the architecture isn't much to write home about. But the natural beauty sort of makes up for it, and the immediate coastal areas are walkable.

26 out of 100 Car Dependent. At least they got that right. But for half the year at least I'd say it's closer to 0. Nobody walks anywhere in Phoenix for most of the year.

Weather, geography, and most important I think, the "Los Angeles Envy" that seems to have guided planning and development here.

He touched on some of the reasons that I live in the boondocks. I live 20 miles from the nearest railroad track or four lane highway. I'm so far from a major airport, that it's extremely rare to be disturbed by jet engine noise.

Problem is, I don't live FAR ENOUGH away from Urban or Suburban locales.

You just can't beat peace and quiet AFAIAC!

Don't know about that so much. In mid - and even not so "mid" - summer I don't care if there is a corner store literally less than a mile away from my house, which in fact there is in my case. I'm walking no futher than my car.

There was a suburban mall near us that was torn down and replaced with the new urbanism. Mixed residential and retail. Retail below, residence above. Defined streets, integrated parking. Enclosed outdoor spaces etc. The problem is that since everything around that mall was developed over the last 50 yrs with the existence of the mall in mind, apart from the few hundred(s) of people who live there, it isn't really a 'town' at all, it's just a much more attractive mall for pedestrians but unattractive to drivers because you have to drive down narrow streets to get to the parking lots. So I wouldn't say it's working all that well in that particular instance.
