Help!!! The Frige... is inoperative

We have a frige full of food and it stopped cooling.

Info.

I cleaned the underneath part the cooling fins was very dirty and clogged.
I unplugged it for 1/2 hour and plugged back in. You can hear the compressor trying to kick on, but it doesn't.

Thoughts please.

Is the condenser fan turning? Many years ago my mom's fridge stopped cooling (well, it would cool, but not get cold). Turned out a piece of packing Styrofoam/popcorn had fallen under where the gentle air currents from the fan drew it there, where it then jammed the fan blade. Pulled it out and voilą, worked fine.

Call a service man. It's too close to Xmas to mess with. Unless you've got a good appliance place nearby. Nobody wants a dead fridge over the holidays. Where will you put the leftovers?
My main icebox is about to take a dump too, so I feel your pain. Keeping my fingers crossed till after the new year.

You got to get into the underside through the back of the frig and check for obstructions, styrofoam or dead mice etc.

The fan is working.

Defrost timer would be my next guess. Assuming it hasn't lost refrigerant.

Food safety first. If the items in the fridge have been below 40F for more than four hours, you probably should get rid of it. Frozen foods that remain solid are probably okay, but if they have defrosted, then either cook and consume immediately or toss it.

We have all of the food packed in a cooler. The big bag of hot wings wouldn't fit. Dang I guess I will have to eat them all.

Now only the lights work. The fan stopped working and when you turn the knob to off and then back on, it doesn't make any sound.

The compressor starter is faulty. It fails to start the compressor. It is used only to kick start the compressor then it is not used anymore. You can replace it if you know the part number. Most HVAC company stock them.

You can see whether you can remove it, clean the connectors and shove it back in. It may work again but it is on its way out. It is attached to the compressor where the wires are.

Have fun.

Additional info, when we bought it NEW about 10 years ago we had trouble with it not cooling they had to fix it three times in three years. It has ran fine for the last seven years. Also the fan came back on.

It sounds as though it's tripping it's own safety since it's going off and coming back on like that. Perhaps the compressor has died?

Sears has appliances on sale this week...
