Grandpa was on a troop transport. He said they took the governor off the motor, ran it up until it was about to blow, and when they jammed the landing craft on the beach for all it was worth. After, they slammed them in reverse at full throttle and didn't have much sympathy for the motor or running gear, as long as it clawed itself off the beach. They would pretty much put it in reverse and gun it until it got off the beach or a Jap round hit it.

When your under fire their isn't a lot of mechanical sympathy, you pretty much just beat on it.

Apparently that's the case, but has there ever been a cooler machine than a WWII era battleship? To me, the only thing that comes close to a battleship for sheer mechanical awesomeness is a steam locomotive, or maybe a 300D (W123 version, of course).
