Ignition question.

My daughter lost her car key for her 1989 Delta 88. How hard is it to replace the ignition? any help appreciated.

Can the dealer cut you a key from the VIN? Does that car have passkey? (black chip near the head of the key).

And why did she only have one key? Even if it does have passkey you can still get a copy for $3 that will at least open the door

It's a 1989 model with regular keys. I had a locksmith make new keys, but my daughter's boyfriend screwed up the ignition switch. I found several on ebay that would work, but I'm not sure on what's involved in removing the ignition switch core.

He's done enough damage. I want to fix it right, even though the car is old it is in really good condition.

If this guy might end up as your son-in-law you and he need to start on the right foot. The car isn't worth fixing right.

The car IS worth fixing. It was a one owner with 89,000 miles.

Certainly the car is worth fixing, but it's not worth buying a bunch of new parts or paying a locksmith to fix it. Get a coupla switches from radio shack and hot wire the ignition. Tell your daughter not leave anything of value in the car because it can"t be locked.
If that doesn't work tell her to get a new boyfriend with better mechanical skills.

There should be a small hole under the ignition. Put the key in the tumbler, and turn to the ACC position. Insert a small pin in the hole and pull the whole mechanism out. Part shouldn't be more than $20 at Autozone. Replacement is the reverse.

When I put the new key in, it won't turn in any direction. the little chrome flange is broken off. Any more suggestions JP?

Yup...go to the parts house and put out the $15 for a repair manual and $20 for the new mechanism and study it...
