Off to Iceland
This month for a short visit to find aurora borealis. All I know about Iceland is that we have to be prepared for -20F temperatures and the possibility of polar bears.
![]() I don't have a fancy camera so I won't be doing any special photography. I'm just wondering if there are any ideas for what to do and see in and around Reykjavik. The northern lights excursions go out at night and return well past midnight.

I stood on Iclandic soil back in 73 when taking Iclandic air to europe. I didn't get past the airport duty free shop though and it was the middle of the night IIRC.
![]() Nice Danish looking airport.

last I heard, they only had about 167 miles of paved roads, so your driving will be limited.

So far as what to do in Reykjavik - I'd try the local talent. The women there, are, (I've read), are often as not real stunners, drop dead bautiful in mny cases, and the ones that are single are by our U.S. standards are really uninhibited sexually and with a bit of luck you could REALLY have a lot of fun!! I'd also take tours of the little volcanoes and hot springs attractions. The country is unbelievably gorgeoeus, and yet, it isn't high on the list of tourist attractions for Americans. You can rent a 4wd vehicle too, to go see some amazing places, but if you do, and forego a guide/driver, you had better know your and the car's driving limitations. This is the country whose currency totally clapsed not to long ago so it would be intertesting to see how that affects things as regards YOUR traveling budget. I think you have made a wise choice to select "Island" (as the natives call it) for a spectacular and memorable vacation. I predict you will love the place and the people you meet there.

I've flown Iceland air once across the Atlantic. Stopped of in Keflavik. Most frightening landing I've ever experienced as I was sure we were going into the sea. Then just before we appeared about to ditch, there was the runway and we were down
The crew were exclusively women, including both pilots. I wasn't able to see anything beyond the airport though but Iceland is one country I really do want to visit both for it's natural beauty and it's geology. You are literally watching plate tectonics in action.- Peter.

After visiting L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, I'd definitely want to find archeological sites of Viking settlements in Iceland and/or reconstructed Viking villages to get a sense what life was like there at the turn of the first millenium AD.

I , too, had the honor of a brief potty visit in Keflavik. A longer stay is on my bucket list, hopefully as a free stopover on the way to Europe someday on Iceland Air. Somehow their pricing never approaches what it was back in the pre-IATA days (1970s) . Let us know how you like it.
