Didn't we have a member on here that was an appliance guru? I'm trying to remember his moniker, but I can't...anyone?

look at the element for any cracks or splits, they go that way when old.

OK folks here is the info.

Model # KGCG802002
Ser # XE1801002

The heating element is

part # 3177527

According to Kitchen aid and the part it self its 120v (not rated for 220) and 1,700 watts. Kitchen Aid said the part is deleted and I have had no luck in finding one.

Thanks

The part number you provided has been superseded by a new one. The only place I see that has a hope of having it is this one:

4173137 - Whirlpool Grill Element

It seems like one of those things you find in an old hardware store where they have old elements hanging all around the store and an old man knows exactly what you need and where it is. He rolls the ladder over, grabs it and blows the dust off of it like it's been there for years.

That's the problem with cheap-o Chinese appliances being dumped into the US market -- no real incentive to repair them or stock parts

This thing was built in 1994. How long do you expect them to maintain parts for the unit?

Not every thing is a conspiracy. You may want to step away from the pipe every now and them and take a look out side.

Did you look on ebay? I easily ( and cheaply ) found elements for our Maytag glasstop range (ca 1998). Yours may be more rare, of course.

Does this thing actually plug into a regular outlet? Or is it hard wired?

If that unit were in my house, and I cared about having the 1700 W griddle working, then I'd be figuring out how to measure how much power is being dissipated when the heating element is turned on at full power.

Even if the heating element is 100% OK, anything dodgy along the way - connections inside the unit, performance of whatever controls the heating element, connections and wiring in the house circuit to which it is connected - could cause it to be running at less than its full rated power.

If I'm looking for something uncommon, then I'll set up one or more eBay saved searches. Their system can be set to automatically send an e-mail message when a match turns up.

Are you sure that the center element is a cooking surface? Most of those in the middle are just warmers.

Ill liik up the model # in a minute.

That element (#7) is only 1700 watts, 120v. I doubt you can do too much with it.

Make sure cooktop is properly grounded. That helps sometimes.

As far as I can tell it is grounded. I called up Kitchen Aid and they said according to their info I should be able to grill a chicken breast in 6-8 min. Tried that and no freaking way.

I have a home warranty (from when we bought the house) so I am thinking they will be getting a call. If they cannot fix it, they have to replace the whole unit (kind of liking that idea). The co-pay is only $60.
