Arming Syria

Am I the only one completely baffled by the call to arm the Syrians??

Are people like John McCain just unable to see the negative effect of handing out weapons to anybody in the middle east?

Who would have thought that the repubs would be on the same side as Al-Qaeda?

If you are looking for someone that sees exactly as you do, please state that up front. If you are looking for a solution that has NO negative effect, again state so. There is no answer that has a ZERO negative effect. Everything you do has a side effect, no ands, buts or ifs.

Today, Al Qaeda decided to take a certain direction. What of it? Back in the days of the USSR, we had the same direction as the insurgents. They were our best friends. Today, we head a different direction. We are enemies. It is that simple. If our goals (for whatever the REAL reason is) are similar, we are friends. Should they change, we will re-evaluate. It is just like marriage. When we said "I do", our goals were similar. In time, that can change and we will be rivals in court. It is that simple. Our friendship is on a case by case basis. What part of that escapes you? Nobody is talking about a "till death do we part" deal anymore.

While I basically agree with you, I must say that we need to make an exception in this case, because these people are defenseless and are being subjected to military mass murder being committed by a tyrant. Shelling unarmed civilian populations is a war crime. Since we cannot invade this place, the least we could do is give these people some means of defending themselves. They need RPGs and automatic rifles. We should have a few laying around somewhere nearby.....

Which is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS unless we need to back someone that will be friendly to us in the future. Assad can grind them into dog food for all we can unless it is in our interests to support them.

That is exactly why Al Qaeda is jumping into the fray

I would much rather see US involvement based on UN resolution or action determined by NATO. EQUAL involvement by all parties as well, no more of this 90% US and a token gesture by everyone else.

I think the Obama administration is taking the right tack by moving through the UN. The time for us to be the world's policeman is over, if ever there was a 'right' time for it....

While I can feel sympathy for the civilian casualties, that mess is not of our making, and I'm glad that we are (at least on the surface) staying out of it.

Backing some new middle east regime in hope of installing an American puppet (which is how it will be seen regardless of the accuracy) is a fools mission.

Remember one of good buddies back in 1980???

Well, I can tell you there are 2 options. Either I fake it or tell you the truth. I grant you that my answer isn't as sexy as playing the "I care" routine that many do but you can listen to political speeches and get the "I do the right thing" or the RC church. Perhaps that is more palatable to you?

What integrity do you expect? It is the way of the world regardless of what people tell you. People like you get surprised what a politician or salesman tells you one thing and it comes out the other way or you find that your wallet is now lighter. I don't. Fact is, nobody GAS about you unless it is to their benefit and I don't GAS about others unless it is in my benefit somehow in return.

Just so you do understand, Al Qaeda is already doing that and an Al Qaeda puppet govt might not be in our favor.

Back in 1980, he was our good buddy. Today, not so. Did you expect it to be like a diamond and be forever?

I'd be shocked if we already weren't.
