Obama to Netanyahu: U.S. will "always have Israel's back"

President Obama told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the United States will "always have Israel's back" before a meeting between the two men at the White House Monday focused on how the United States and Israel will respond to the threat posed by Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

"The United States will always have Israel's back when it comes to Israel's security," Mr. Obama said, calling Israel one of America's "greatest allies" and deeming the bond between the two nations "unbreakable."

"We all know that it's unacceptable from Israel's perspective to have a country with a nuclear weapon that has called for the destruction of Israel," Mr. Obama said. He went on to say that it is unacceptable from the perspective of the United States as well, since the U.S. would like to avoid a nuclear arms race in the Middle East and does not want to see terrorists or a state sponsor of terrorism with a nuclear weapon.

Mr. Obama said before the ninth meeting between the two leaders that he reserves "all options" to deal with an Iranian nuclear threat, adding that the policy is not simply going to be "containment." But he added that both he and Netanyahu hope to avoid a military conflict.

"We do believe that there is still a window that allows for a diplomatic solution," Mr. Obama said, adding that Iran needs to make a decision to embrace that solution.

Netanyahu thanked Mr. Obama for a "strong speech" to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Sunday during which the president hit many of the same points that he did in his remarks Monday.

"Iran's leaders should understand that I do not have a policy of containment; I have a policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," the president told the powerful lobbying group. Mr. Obama also said there had been "too much loose talk of war" and suggested sanctions against Iran are having an effect.

The meeting comes as Israel considers an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and discussion of what role the United States would play in such an attack. Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu cast Israel as America's only "reliable, stable, faithful ally" in the Middle East, though one with "the sovereign right to make its own decisions." He said his role Monday was to "ensure that Israel remains the master of its fate."

Netanyahu has previously laid out his demands for Iran, which include that the country "dismantle the underground nuclear facility in Qom, stop enrichment inside Iran, and get all the enriched material out of Iran."

Many U.S. officials fear that Israel is moving too quickly toward military action, and Mr. Obama was expected to push Netanyahu to defy the more hawkish voices within the Israeli government.

Then we agreed that in a street fist fight between Obama and Putin, the smart money would be on Putin.
