Personhood for Apes
I was watching Harry's Law on TV and the episode was dealing with a gorilla who escaped from a zoo and the person who took in the gorilla wanted to adopt the Gorilla. In order to adopt a gorilla it would have to be granted person hood.
The show said that there were countries that had granted rights to great apes. I looked it up and low and behold there are some who have done so. New Zealand has gone the farthest. They have granted basic rights to 5 apes which means they cannot be used for research, teaching or testing. I like the idea. Apes are a few genes away from us. Our genetic tree did not split that long ago. They have very advanced intelligence. I do have issues with animals like that being held captive for our entertainment. Poor hood
