This brings back memories.

The DB who took over the postal route after our revered postman retired will do ANYTHING to work less. In my specific case, he must walk about 150 feet to the box at the house. That is WAY too far.

So, what does this DB do?

He decides that my front step is above the regulation. The regulations states that he doesn't have to climb more than 7" and the step is 9". Postmaster comes out and visits the house and agrees with the carrier. So, I have to move the box to the very front of the house...........before the step.

He decides that the lawn is a bit too tall for his tastes. Be understanding fo the fact that 3" is too tall for him. So, he doesn't deliver. He "saves" the mail on his truck or in the post office until I cut the grass. Then he delivers a bundle of it.

He always decides that the snow is way too much for him, even if I use the snowblower. I get no mail until the snow melts and he can see the walkway or the grass.

There is no way to control the behavior of this DB. The Postmaster explained that trying to fire a postal employee is basically impossible. Unless he commits a crime while working, it won't happen.

Fortunately, all of my important mail goes to the post office box. I arranged this many years ago to avoid the problems with this DB.

Well, when you cannot fire me and/or my raises are guaranteed, what do you expect? Why should I bust my ass and make $X while others can coast or even screw off and make $X.

I'd guess if you order something two-day, it's probably going to be regular FedEx, not FedEx Ground.

Remember, we're in the sticks. FedEx contract vehicles out here don't even have a matched team of mules.

Man it's happened to me before. USPS, UPS, FedEx. All three have screwed up. Well, I would'd say FedEx actually screwed up because there was a huge snowstorm across the nation. They gave me my money back. UPS, and USPS, not a chance. Two days late.

During our peak season we ship about 1,000 packages a week. We've been courted by UPS, FedEx, USPS and DHL (don't know if they're still around?). We tried the first 3 (in that order, each for two years) and found UPS to be the least incompetent. We've been with them for the second time for four years now.

I would say for the most part, they've been the "best" with generally timely delivery and fairly reliable tracking. As far as insurance goes, I think their M.O. is to deny every claim based on "Insufficient Packaging-Does Not Meet UPS Standards." We fight every denied claim and are successful about 75% of the time.

In our case, proof of delivery is very important since many of our shipments are consignment displays which won't be inventoried by my reps and subsequently billed 6-9 months after shipment. It's hard to believe, but their are some unscrupulous customers who will claim they never received their shipment. Until we provide them with their or their employees' name and signature for the delivery.

There certainly are issues with all of them.

When we were with FedEx, all of the FedEx Ground and FedEx Express (Next Day and 2Day) were independent contractors who owned their trucks (and we're in a metro area). Annoyingly, every service was separate and handled by the respective driver. When we had expedited shipments, we had to call in for an Express pickup since the Ground driver couldn't take it. Throw FedEx Freight on top of it and we had 3 different numbers to call with the same company. With UPS we only need to separate out the Freight shipments and it's the same contact number.

USPS sucks. They have left numerous packages in the snow on my unused, unwalked, unshoveled front door, when the well trafficked side door, adjacent to the driveway, is shoveled out walked on and lit.
Beyond moron. Sadistic.

And now the Post Master tells me that if they can't find my package, because it was scanned as delivered, its MY problem. I need to solve it with the sender.

The package was scanned into the postal system, and yet its MY problem that they lost it.

Is there any wonder why they are losing money!

To answer that question - it's pretty much First Class Mail, but for packages that can weigh more than 13 ounces.

It can be a relatively affordable, relatively reliable way to send packages relatively quickly - especially for smallish packages, and especially to recipients at residential and/or remote addresses (where other carriers may have residential and/or "delivery area" surcharges).

Of course it's your problem.

You can't really believe they have any possibility of "finding" a lost package, do you?

When Fedex loses a tracked package, the tracking ends where the last scan was done. Nobody has a clue why it did not proceed.

WTF good is "tracking"? Once it's gone, it's gone.


I did have UPS find a lost overnight letter one time. They asked the driver where he delivered it and sent him back to retrieve it. He actually did. I damn near fell off my chair.

If I were in such a situation, then I think that I would continue to concentrate on the Postmaster. He or she is the one who could be finding out who the carrier was for that route on that day, and notifying said carrier that the intended recipient didn't receive the package.

If the Postmaster were remarkably unhelpful, then I might try to find out what's involved in going "up the ladder" within the USPS. I've never done that.

They simply close ranks. I won't go anywhere. The most that you get is that they have "done everything they could". Don't waste your time.
