Anyone still play vinyl?

I recently discovered the coolness that is vinyl. I know its kind of a novelty but I kinda like the sound. I do however get a little popping noise as the record plays. Is that just the nature of the beast? I have played with the counterweight a little but it hasnt cured it. I am glad to see some of my favorite artists have put out their albums on vinyl or else Id be forced to listen to a bunch of crap my dad listens to.

Popping mostly due to scratched or pitted grooves...a new stylus or cartridge might help, but once it's scratched it's only getting worse.

I'm into vinyl, pretty much just old funk and soul.

I think I need to play with it a little. everything is new. New record and player. I was pretty bummed when I brought it home and found out I had to get a phono preamp just to use it.

i love vinyl.just turned some old warren zevon, and jethro tull.the popping your getting is more then likely dust.find a good cleaner to go over them every time before you play them.my zevon i played tonight was really popping or crackling when i got it out after setting for close to 20 yrs.but after a half dozen cleanings it's hardly noticeble.also don't forget the needle.they pick up dust and need to be cleaned as well.

My dad is an audiophile, I grew up with him listening to classics. Dave Brubeck, Abbey Lincoln, Everly Brothers, etc. He sold his Sonus Faber speakers recently though, and focused his time on photography. I think he still has his vacuum tube amps, and his Oracle turntable.

I ONLY listen to vinyl. Congrats on discovering true music. Next you need to discover the superiority of vacuum tube amps. The quality of your cartridge/needle will have a huge impact on sound, along with the proper alignment of the stylus. If you're using a brand new needle they usually require fifty to a hundred hours of breaking in until they reveal all the sound they are capable of. There are needles that go for many thousands of dollars nowadays.

Needle Doctor is a great website for vinyl supplies.

Great medium, don't listen to the old platters very often, but the turntable is set up and ready to go.

Or were you talking about the band? Great San Fran funk band. Not sure where they are these days, but I worked with them a lot back on the 90's and early 00's when I was still working the club circuit.

Skynyrd.....

Catch a live show if you have a chance, their performance is well put together these days. Real good time for fans of any era.

The nice thing about vinyl, it was recorded as it was played. You didn't have much digital mastering involved, so you got to ear everything.

I'm old school, and although my radio and party DJ days are decades ago, I still have a vast collection of vinyl that trumps every other media form I own, including iTunes.

I'll demo some of them to the younger set, who are astonished that such a prehistoric relic can sound as good as it does!

Some crackling and pops can be attributed to dust and dirt, but it's usually microscopic damage to the fragile vinyl surface. Actually, a premuim cartridge/needle will amplify the imperfections of said track, due to its higher fidelity.

This is my original Dual 1257 turntable that got me though the college years...

...and a Philips 867 that I picked up on eBay...I keep this one in the studio...

Not quite sure what you mean.

Good mastering engineers are no better or worse as a result of the digital reformation.

If you mean that any Joe off the street can buy some mastering software and think they are doing the job of mastering... I would agree.

Or that the analog days of recording were simpler, more organic. Less hi jinks during the recording process. Probably have to agree on that one as well, even though the majority of that malarkey happens before the mastering stage.

One of my favorite things about vinyl is the dynamic range typically displayed on records. The current trend is to master pop music so that the dynamic range is about 1db. Very tedious to listen to, and extremely common.

What? No linear track?
