I corrected myself, referring to astronomy. I don't know much about it, so I couldn't say how badly leap years throw of the regular cycle of a calendar.
Reoccurring effects, no matter how long the astronomical cycles, seem to be extensively recorded over time. A calendar on the other hand is still a human creation.
