I suspect that he ended his campaign when he realized that his numbers in Pennsylvania, his home state, would not be pretty.

My thoughts exactly. Just couldn't stand another No-Santorum mandate from his home state.

The impact: Fewer targets for the circular firing squad.

Pity.

and so ends the weakest Republican field that can I think of in history. I never believed that BO would stand a chance at re-election given the state of things until these guys started opening their mouths. The only really qualified candidate that was a veteran, doctor, forward thinking, and not a zealot sociopath, was considered too extreme.

How are the Republicans going to get fired up about this guy versus how fired up Democrats are about Obama?

Maybe they'll give Romney his emotion chip and like Data become more human. Right now all I can picture is a bunch of apathetic republicans and independents not even bothering to vote. He can't go after him on healthcare. The economy is a wash as a debate issue. He doesn't motivate, get people "fired up and ready to go".

If Christie has any presidential ambitions, he's gotta be kicking himself right now.

The man's an East-Coast Ivy-Leaguer Mormon who used to drive a Citroen (badly) - think that those corn-fed, rock-ribbed midwestern Republicans will ever get behind him? Right now, most of them are adjusting the color balance on their Philco TV's in a futile attempt to make Barack Obama look whiter in their eyes...

One has to wonder if Romney will try to move towards the center and do a flip-flop-flip

I wouldn't get your hopes up on that idea, but if Santorum had stayed in the race, that could have resulted in a brokered convention, which would show how much support RP really has. Newt, at this point, is not a viable contender any more. I doubt too many of Santorum's supporters will move to RP's camp, as they are virtually direct opposites.

Any more? Would that not presume he was viable at one point? The only folks who thought he was viable was him and his second mistress/third wife.
