the height of arrogance and stupidity.

Receive a call from a telemarketer for a pledge for PAL. I've donated before and I agree to give them another $35.

"Hold on and I'll pass you over to my verifier.....two seconds, Mr. Carlton"

He goes off the line and do I get the verifier?

Nope..........call goes to voice mail............"Your call is very important to us..........."

I sure hope I didn't break the handset when that phone hit the cradle.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does PAL stand for?

That's one reason I don't do phone telemarketers, PERIOD. If I want to do a donation to something, I'll do it on line.

Got a call last week from an organization I'd given to in the past. I was heading out the door so told the caller, yes, I'll donate, just send me the paperwork in the mail, I'm in a hurry. Caller says, 'Can I put you on hold while I transfer you to my supervisor?" Well, no you can't. What idiot sets up these fundraising practices?

My uni calls me all the time (2x a week usually) asking for money. They just don't seem to get the fact that I already dished out my full salary to them for 2 years and have since been paying my loans and grad school tuition with the rest. Why yes I'd love to make a voluntary donation of a measly $500 minimum to them for no reason

At least by now I've got the number in my head not to answer

I think the story is the caller makes the pitch, which is the hard part, and the 'supervisor' takes the credit card number which is time consuming. Both of them have a script to work from.

It is a business and nothing more.

It is ALSO an abuse of privacy and abuse of your telephone line.

I have asked that question at least 10 times in the past. Each time I receive the identical response "YOU can write to the attorney general of the State of NY who can provide that information".

Yes, YOU want my money but YOU won't provide the statement of expenses for the charity to verify it's accounting standards.

Therefore YOU won't be getting any money from ME.

I screwed up...........twice.

Usually, the caller ID would let me avoid the call. But, I had to switch lines for the answering machine and I didn't switch the caller ID to the second line. Screwup number one.

Then, I pickup the phone and there is a delay of about two seconds while the computer signals the telemarketer. I usually slam the phone down in this period of time..........but, for whatever reason............I didn't do it this time. Screwup number two.

So, I suppose I got what I deserved.

Same here, except I have no loans but the university made me re-take several courses not credited by them when I transferred over. Told them to remove my phone number from their list. Then I saved the number as "Do not answer" in case they prove to be stubborn and call again.

Uni still has my childhood phone # -- since this is primarily used for Internet access in a house that's now a rental, they're welcome to call all they like. I give them a few bucks here and there, BTW.
