Cool old German wagon on ebay: 1960 Goliath Hansa Kombi

Pretty funky ride! Must be fun to find parts.:) Water-cooled flat 4, front wheel drive. Sounds like the recipe Subaru copied. ;)

Sorry about the double post. :o Not sure how the other one occurred. Too bad we can't self-delete.

That would be a wonderful thing here if the right people exercised that option.

Oh it would be beyond awesome to have GOLIATH across your hood!

Indeed! :D

I'm not sure what to make of the name. Must have been comparatively large in it's day (for the working class). I'd say ironic humor, but the Germans have none so...

Germans have explicit, delicate and mostly fine tuned humor. I admit, they are not readily willing to show or share their humor. That doesn't mean they don't have humor.

I could post plenty of evidence. The problem is, it would require full command of German language, incl. familiarity of any applicable regional traditions and/or dialect. So it's not an easy thing to grasp.
I have yet to see a translation into English that reflects any of the delicacy presented in German humor. In my opinion, it's not possible.

Even within Germany, people from different regions may not have a sense for the humor of people from regions other then their own.

Humor exists in Germany. Plentiful!

Now, the Borgwards were in fact, no nonsense hard metal cars. Name giving? Well, Goliath for a wagon may make sense considering their coupe was named Isabella?
I don't know.

Ps, I am glad you have enjoyable memories of your Grandfather. I wish I would have known my grandparents.

I read that "Goliath" was actually a separate make within the Borgward group, rather then a model name.

HP ratings? Top speed? I only ask because I'm guessing that cool old wagon would be horrific to drive on modern streets.

What a great old car.

If it's been well preserved, and knowing how ahead of their time some vintage German FWD designs were, that car might be surprisingly pleasent to drive today.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I'm fairly certain that this is not a small-block Chevy...
