When I was working at the BIG oil company I worked all kinds of holidays. In fact, I even forgot most of them except for Christmas and the Fourth of July.
All energy companies run 24/7 and they can be some of the busiest days of the year. If you want to build something that only takes a day and you cannot get a building permit then build it on a holiday! None of those pesky Building Inspectors out roaming around to catch you. Lots of people do this and since they are cutting all kinds of corners they also skimp on contacting utility companies as well. And if they hit a natural gas main in the process? Oooopps! How about thank you to all the people working in all the businesses that are open today having cheesy sales to "honor our fallen heros". People who can't afford to take three days off, who are grateful for the opportunity to pick up overtime/holiday pay so they can keep the lights on and the kids fed. People who don't have the luxury of lounging on their patios grilling burgers and drinking to excess to "honor our fallen heros".
