I'm trying to setup a VPN for remote access by one PC to one SQL database on a server. I understand Hamachi is a popular way to accomplish this. I like how, "you can tunnel into an SQL database without messing with ports and the firewall." or something like that. I have Hamachi on both the server and remote PC and they connect. Great! Now what?

The biggest problem is I don't understand networks and I don't speak the language. I tried to follow directions to setup a Minecraft server but I don't see setup and .ini files in the application's server directory that are shown in the typical Minecraft VPN walkthrough.

Is there a guide for dummies that can help me? VPN for Dummies might be it but I imagine it will get me through setting up the VPN, which I believe is pretty much done through Hamachi, but not exactly what I need in my situation; i.e., I don't need to know how to rebuild a carburetor, I need to know how to rebuild a Weber 40 DCOE. Is there hope for me or should I pay a provider $10/mo to manage it for me?

I can try and help maybe. What is your server running as far as OS? Linux or Windows server?

It sounds like you are using windows.

Most of the connection trouble you'll have will probably be caused by some sort of anti-virus software...

I've found it best to turn the f%^&^%&er off whilst trying to set up network connections. Set up the connection as described by a how to for the software you are using and get it to work first. Then switch your anti-virus stuff back on and see if it still works!

Good suggestions. Running XP Pro sp3 on the server, XP Home sp3 on the remote PC. It works with the firewall off, doesn't work with the firewall on. The firewall is provided by the ISP, along with a security suite and Exchange service. The firewall has settings to allow applications. I allowed the program in question and Hamachi but it still doesn't work. I called the ISP and between their suggestion to mess with ports and buy their VPN service I wasn't getting to an acceptable solution. Curiously, Hamachi's chat feature works between connected PCs even if the ping feature doesn't. $10/mo is starting to sound fair :/

I can't remember about all of this IT stuff but I think some VPN has like a transmission and receiving port. So it uses two ports.
