Spare Keys for MB
Hello,
I only have one key for my car. How would I make a spare key to it? THe key looks quiete odd to me, and doesn't seem to be as easy as going to a key smith and asking him to make a spare. Anyone know how to get one and approximate cost? thanks.. |

Go to your MB dealer with your VIN, Registration and DL # and you will have them in less than a week.

Cheap $12.00 for a key is still robbery. Even it were to be cut in Germany. How much would it be if it were made in China?

It would be MUCH cheaper if it were made in China, but it would also SUCK! MB factory-spec keys will last YEARS. Cheap keys will wear MUCH faster, and screw up your locks while they're at it.

The keys are made in Webberville MI. The blanks say Germany and all that ho-dunk but they are made right in my back yard.

That's cool, but wherever they cut them, they are still made to MB specs, laser cut, and steel, not cheap, soft brass. Much higher quality key than a "Joe Locksmith" copy.

I paid 10.99 for the spare master key and 11.99 or $1 more for the valet key, weird that the valet costs more. I got this at the dealer in San Jose, CA. I believe the price is set by MBUSA so I think that should be everywhere. Just call you dealer's part dept before you drive down there.
Good luck! Mingson

Oh and BTW, I also believe they are much higher quality also, I think the local drug store wanted $6.00 for a dup so I think $11 for a key that is not made of the soft brass is a good deal. Not to mention the original quality.
My car is the standard key (not popout type) . I asked if they have a conversion to the popout type but I was told they do not. Mingson

I live in Guatemala and when I moved here back in 2000 I lost the spare key to the benz 190 that I brought with me. Went to the local dealership here and they ordered it from Germany. Paid 30 euros for it, that was when the exhange rate was about .90 and it took a month to get. Got ripped off but, needed to have that spare key. Last thing that I wanted was to have to leave the car parked for 30 days when and if I ever lost the only key that I had. But if Nigeria is like Guatemala, along with the VIN, I used the registration of the car, to take along with you proof of ownership of the vehicle, otherwise, if it is a scrupulous dealership, they will not order the key for you.
