The retirement and SS moneys I've paid. Beyond that, they "owe", as in to be obligated to a debt, nothing. This was easy.

I am not convinced that they are paying more. So far from the ones I have heard who have stated their tax rate (Romney and Buffet) I have paid more then both of them. They may be be paying more in raw amounts but I am paying more as a percentage. I do not like my taxes going towards helping companies make more money in the form of subsidies, tax breaks and the like. I do not like the idea that GE pays no taxes and I pay .. well you get the point.

Government steps in to protect those who cannot protect themselves. I suppose this could mean different things for different people, but in general, I think we can all agree that the government should protect us from unscrupulous people who, by what they are doing in their own interests, hurt the interests of the public.

Absolutely correct. In the early part of my life, I had my financial back against the wall a few times. Willingness to work was the only weopon I had and it worked every time.

The only thing I feel the government owes the population down to the individual level is to be responsible and act in a responsible fashion. We seem to have drifted away from that over the many years.
