2014 Chevy SS

2014 Chevrolet SS Confirmed

Glad to know that the RWD Caprice isn't going to remain donut-muncher-only for long. Not that I'd want poor MPG, but having a gov't-only model of car smells of the bad days of Russia to me, so it's good that Generic Morons is offering a civilian version.

My has a trail Blazer SS. It's got the Vette engine in it. He has massaged it quite a bit with headers, rebuilt the engine and trans and he is making billet aluminum bits and pieces for his truck and members of an SS forum.

Not my cup of tea but I can see the attraction.

This is supposed to be a CAR, not an over-powered bread truck.

Car, truck. They are SS's. They are all over powered. What's the big deal?

I admit I like the looks of the Camaro and Impala quite a bit. Must be some boyish lost testosterone longing. Or something.

This car was sold here as the Pontiac G8 GT. The police version has the longer wheelbase of the Chinese Buick Park Avenue which has more room in the back seat.

When this was a Pontiac GM could almost not give them away. Now that it's a Chevy people are clamoring for them.

My wife drives a G8 GT and it is no Mercedes in its' ride, but the 0-60 in 5.5 seconds is fun. It also gets 25 mpg on the highway at 70 mph, and with the limiter removed it will hit 178 mph.

And repairs? In 45,000 miles the tires and the wiper blades have been replaced. Beyond that... nothing yet.

+1 on the good mpg, LSx's are nice and torquey so you can really gear them out, my friend corvette practically idles on the highway.

Isn't the base car for the Park Avenue the Holden Statesman?

The Australians seem to have a knack for building well handing American cars. This should be fun.

Yes, it is. Holden has discontinued the Statesman but is apparently still building the long wheelbase version that is sold as the Buick Park Avenue and will be sold here as the Caprice PPV.

It is also sold in England as a Vauxhall. Jermry Clarkson tested a Supercharged one on Top Gear in 2008 or so. That version was sold here as the Pontiac G8 GXP. There are only about 1,500 of those in the states, and my Wife has told me to keep an eye out for one. I guess the G8 GT is too tame for her tastes.

The GXP will do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, but it requires Premium at all times. You also have to put up with the Supercharger whining a lot.

I can't help but wonder if timing has a lot to do with it. There's been a bit of a renaissance with the front engine, rear drive cars.

It's pretty amazing the efficiency and power they're able to get out of these modern engines (or even less-than-modern design engines with modern controls). When you think about what you would have to drive back in the 70's and 80's to get 25 mpg, 6 cylinder Mustang II or Camaro, well...blech!
