Something different has caught my eye...
Thinking about selling my ML and buying something old and funky....
Maybe not too old and funky. Ive found some clean, turnkey FJ40s on my local craigslist that look to be pretty good deals. These have always interested me, and seem like a car that would be pretty cool to own. Anyone have experience with these? If so, please tell me I am not completely crazy, and that I could daily drive one of these...

I think you inherited your attention span from a fly

I'm really considering it. There are some really clean ones that I could get for what I have put into my ML

I had a friend in high school who had a '76 FJ40. Talk about lots of fun for off-roading.

Get the FJ, and drop a 617 into it

old ones are bad a$$, get a couple, so they can be friends.
The new FJcruisers have less visibility from the cabin that a sherman tank. Id avoid those, stick only with the old.

From what I understand by talking to guys that own them is that the stock gears aren't too highway worthy.
They have UNIMOG like RPM's above 4000 @ 60 MPH.

Evan is right. I've owned a number of FJ55's. They are not geared for highway cruising. We currently have an FJZ80 and that is geared for US interstate driving. I loved the FJ 55's as a rugged truck but didn't like driving it across Wyoming.
