Interesting find inside an old book

I purchased from an used bookstore a World War 1 book. It looked like the kind of book given to soldiers after the war (if there is such a thing). Tucked in the pages was a letter from the US Army to the soldier thanking him for his service! It has the guy's name and address in Iowa.

Interesting.

The soldier is pushing up daisies now but I thought it might be fun track down the guy's family and maybe they will want the book back.

that is awesome! Try tracking the family down! It'd be interesting to see what they say

If not the book, I would think that the family would want the letter.

My letter like that is signed by Richard Nixon.

Cool idea to contact the family!

I love old books and have accumulated quite a few. I have found a few interesting things in them too.

Thats a great story, Ben. I hope you can reach the family. If it were my dad or grandfather, that would mean a lot to me.

You know, you have an absolutely uncanny resemblance to some famous politician. Can't think of the name right now, but I'm sure it'll come to me . . .

hmmmm.....I don't know what you are are talking about.

I hear they will be making a movie about John Edwards soon. They cannot decide who will play him in the movie though. Maybe Tommy Lee Jones?

You're WAY off! Clooney will fit the roll both cosmetically and idealistically.

this type of thing is really meaningful to the family, if you can track them down, which in this day and age is probably easy enough.

I found an 80s YMCA identity tag for a small girl in a parts car once, and seeing that she was the same age as I, did a 15 second search on facebook, and found her.

After she initially freaked out, the family was glad to receive email pics of the car and relive the memories of owning their 1981 240D.

Obviously, what you have is far more meaningful to a family, so its worth tracking them down if you can.

About 20 years ago I was digging around in an old van in a wrecking yard in Dallas and found a photo album. It was filled with pictures of some guy in Viet-Nam.

From the looks of the van you could tell the guy had been living in it. I guess it was impounded and wound up for sale at the Dallas auto pound where it was purchased by the wrecking yard.

I offered to buy it but the lot guys said I could have it. I tried to trace the address through the van's Texas plate, but how do you track an address of a homeless guy?

A friend of mine had some pull with the Red Cross and somehow through them they found the guy and returned his photos.

And yes, he was happy to see them. He didn't really care about the van, but he did miss that photo album.

Well at yard sales we usually pick up some pocket novels to read at the beach from time to time. The wife was reading one of them this weekend. Purchased it some time last fall somewhere. Old money fell out.

This thread just reminded me to get it out of my wallet. No way to return it That I can think of. Plus it is currency of an era no longer in use. Expensive book mark for someone. Or they hid it away in the book and forgot about it.

Not that much money to really get concerned about either. I would still like to see the original owner if still alive get it back. I have no ideal of how to do that though.

Are we talking British Imperial currency, prior to the decimal system conversion, possibly even Empire era?
