Suggestions on things to do in Denver?

I'll be in Denver at the end of July, and looking for things to do there! We might go to Pikes Peak, as long as there are no fires!

What kinds of things do you like to do? Are you an active outdoor person or more of a museum person? Coors Field is a great place to catch a game, driving to the parking lot near the summit of Mount Evans (14,000+ feet) and a light hike to the top is terrific fun and that's a good time of year to do it.

More details about the kinds of things you like will help a LOT, because there are many varied things to do in and around Denver.

Forney Transportation Museum. Cog railway to Pike's Peak starts in Manitou Springs which was in the path of the Waldo Canyon fire. Don't know how it fared. Bishop's Castle, a couple of hours drive W of Pueblo is worth a visit. If you're into Buddhism, the Great Stupa at the Shambala Mountain Center west of Ft. Collins near Red Feather Lakes is nice. Alan Ginsberg's grave is on the property too.

Drive to Mt. Evans, stop along the way at several lakes (take a coat), The capitol building tour, (so much beautiful stone work), Pearl street outdoor mall in Boulder, Highly recommend the Free celestial seasonings tour in Boulder and Coor's beer tour in Golden (free beer) and stuff in old Golden, also Rocky mountain national park. Take a coat & raincoat.
.........If fact, just google attractions around Denver; there is too much to do.

Be sure to check out the REI store in Denver while you're there. I think it's the largest one in the country.

Six Flags is neat, too.

Oh! And, check out the old Rocky Mountain Arsenal. It's a wildlife refuge now.

GO to Red Rocks. Go to Central City and lose a few bucks in the casinos and stop by Vic's gold panning. Go anywhere and have a Mexican hamburger. Visit the first Chipotle. Go to the museum. Find a copy of the Onion in print. Take a lap around Wash Park. Have breakfast at Bump & Grind. Play a round of disc golf at any of the awesome courses. See a show, somebody cool is always playing somewhere. Take your Mercedes to Star Tech. Try not to start a fire. Take a hike up Green Mountain, esp if there are thunderstorms on the eastern plains. Play hackey sack with random stoners.

How much time you got?

I would check out the Forney, and there is an incredible air museum, Wings Over the Rockies, that will take about four hours to see. Make sure to try your hand on the Wright Flyer simulator while you are there.

I can recommend The Academy Hotel in Colorado Springs if you get down that far. Check out the Garden of the Gods and if there is not something special going on there then visit The Bishop's Castle.

Just north of the Forney, just north of I-70, is an old cemetery where a lot of Denver's founding fathers are buried. Lots of weird 'Monuments' there if you are into that sort of thing.

And if you can catch a concert at Red Rocks then by all means do so. If not then just go during the day and check the place out. It is amazing.

Silas Soule is buried in that cemetery. (Riverside) Well worth tipping your hat to that fellow.

The American River is quite a drive I think. The South Platte SW of Denver is the best closest trout stream as long as it has water. We're in a drought right now. They may be releasing minimum flows to keep the fish alive.

Take a tour of the brown palace downtown. (longest operating hotel in the country) really beautiful. The unsinkable Molly Brown house is not to far away, also a couple of blocks from the brown Palace is the 16th (IIRC) street area, the street has been closed off to traffic and is a lot of nice shoppes and very walkable.
