TYC Parts

Looking for observations on the quality of the TYC brand of replacement parts. (Not restricted to Mercedes vehicles.)

TYC make "OEM-like" parts for the body repair industry. The parts are used in place of OEM factory parts to lower repair charges and/or increase the shop margin and to appease claims adjusters.

In my experience the parts fit well and are almost visually identical. However, they are not built as "robust" as most OEM pieces, using lighter metals, thinner plastic casting, and more concerning, lighter gauge wiring in things like headlamp and tail light assemblies.

I have actually noticed the opposite with TYC parts...

Some OE fenders are made of Aluminum, while the TYC fenders are made from steel. Quite a bit heaver, and feels a little more solid. They do the same with hoods (like the OE Toyota Prius hood is aluminum, and the TYC is steel). A friend has TYC headlights on his Subaru Legacy... The light cutoff isnt as sharp as an OEM light, but looks identical. The headlight wiring seems to be heavier gauge internally, but could just be cheaper/thicker insulated wiring.

I am with MTI on fitment and visual looks. The parts look like OEM, and fit pretty damn well.

Answer

If there is no choice, use them.
* A junker - clunker that you plan to scrap in two years is IMO an acceptable candidate.
* Patching together as a first car for a teenager, maybe???
* Dire financial circumstances, I would still look to good used parts first if possible.

If you want or need top quality, run away from TYC parts.

I have been forced as a mechanic (working in body and mechanical shops) by insurance companies to install TYC parts, you can easily feel the weight - mass difference, IMO there is an obvious visual - fit - durability quality factor.

I will NOT allow them on my personal vehicles, paying the difference out of pocket, or junking the vehicle.

Years ago, my wife wrecked her Pontiac Grand Prix, insurance demanded the use of TYC parts (would not allow us to pay the difference out of pocket), repaired with TYC parts and sold the car instantly.

Replacement 86-93 124 headlights are crap (poor lens seal, flimsy internal brackets, recalcitrant adjusters, etc.) but still better than DOT headlights.

The vehicle is a Ford. Where would you get top quality parts for a Ford? Can't get them from the dealer!!!

Replacing the electric radiator fan assy on a 2008 Edge. It's a two-fan unit; one motor used up its brushes in a mere 55k miles. Motors are not available individually; you have to buy the entire assembly. The TYC part is $132 delivered with a lifetime warranty; FoMoCo part is $400 plus tax with a 12 month/12k miles warranty. R & R is a 20 minute job, so labor isn't a factor.

I know the part, my local salvage network wants stupid money for it..

Buy the TYC part, but be prepared (warranty papers) to replace it in 4 - 5 years.

Better than OE. The OE part lasts 4 years, then you have to shell out another $400 for a replacement.

I just replaced a condenser fan on a 2002 chebby cavalier. went with TYC for price. I believe it was $55 delivered via fleabay.

Has anyone ever had to replace the condenser fan on their old MB? I know mine is still original....

I went through three last week on W123's, the bearings seized on all of them.
I installed good used units.

I tried an after-market aux fan on one car, it did not move enough air = cooling system temperature dropped by 10° C with a good used factory unit..
