My beef has been with the news reporting. Every report, whether on our "standard" radio news/information station, or CBS, or Fox all used that same "floating face-down on the bottom of the pool"--not as a quote from the 10 year old, but as a statement of the situation.

Face it--You know I'm right.
It's because it is syndicated, obviously. It's AP.

Also I will concede that there are often errors that should not occur, but understanding the mechanisms behind the stories is crucial.

When I was on the school board I read reports and listened to them on the tv and radio on a weekly basis. There was no shortage of mistaken or misunderstanding reporting but at least 90 to 95 % was reported pretty accurately. I knew because I was there and was quoted frequently.

They did a pretty decent job and spelled my name correctly 100% of the time.

Fox news likes to say the "Lame stream media" is always wrong and loose with the facts because Fox is.

I suppose that the bar of 90% being "pretty accurate" is a tolerable standard for most folks.

In my business, if I'm "pretty accurate" 90% of the time, I'm out of business.

In your business, if you're "pretty accurate" 90% of the time and, with regard to the remaining 10%, the building collapses, would you still be OK with "pretty accurate"?

Suffice it to say that I find it quite surprising that an architect would be OK with 90% "pretty accurate".

I could conclude from your statement that only 75% is perfectly accurate. The real question, from those who are not on the school board, and do not have inside information is:

Which 75% do you believe?

Obviously neither of us is in the news reporting business.

In my business of course I strive for 100% accuracy. Achieving it is possible most of the time as it is in your business.

It is not possible in the news reporting business.

But most of the folks at least here locally do try to be accurate, I believe.

The "Infonews entertainment" industry nationally is just not worth a warm bucket of spit when it comes to accuracy though. Many of them don't even try.

Isn't that the purpose of editors?
Just because its an AP story, does that mean it must be quoted exactly as AP wrote it?

Yes, but depends on the quote that they were working from (as this was, though I agree they could have paraphrased it better), and yes afaik due to copyrights.
