Issues like this never seem to get reported in any unbiased way. Things related to gun ownership/use/carrying, etc are just as polarizing as topics like abortion. Neither side ever seems to convert the other, and rarely are they ever mentioned without a bias one way or the other.

We still love to try, though, to convert the non-believers . . . .

Given a choice, I'd rather live in a neighborhood where it was widely-known that a lot of people owned and were proficient with guns, than one full of anti-gun advocates, even if I was personally against owning a gun.

Sorry, I didn't mean to infer that the NRA was an unbiased source, someone mentioned that they used to have that feature, and I confirmed that they still do. For the record, the stories are not creditted to the NRA, but rather to the news source that originally reported them. Usually newspapers, and as such, it should be fairly easy to verify them. I've only looked up one or two over the years, if there was something particularly interesting, but I imagine one could check them all if so inclined.

It's interesting that these type of stories do get reported, but usually as a smaller blurb in the local section. Something along the lines of three column inches for a local homeowner (otherwise law-abiding and uninteresting) shooting a man breaking into his home, versus front page news, often over a larger region even, for a criminal shooting someone in an attempt to take their car.

I guess, whatever sells, right? News is just business afterall.

I somehow imagine that finding a lot of people who "owned and were proficient with guns in a neighborhood" might be about as likely as finding a neighborhood with lots of Pit Bulls with very responsible owners.

Here in PHX, that neighborhood would have both, and large quantities of contraband.

I think your bias is showing.

They never have been.

I've had to shoot two rattlesnakes and one water mocassin this year that I considered an "immediate" threat. Used a Smith & Wesson 22 revolver with a 3" barrel on them. One of my favorite guns.

I've heard that it's fairly easy to hit a rattlesnake, because they actually sense the bullet coming and try to strike it. I'm happy that I've never had occasion to test the theory. Only came across a rattler in the wild once, sunning on the side of a trail, and I just stayed a distance away and made some noise and it took off. Usually they only get mean if they're pressed/trapped or perceive you as a threat to their nest.

I remember reading quite a few years ago that the most likely candidate for being bit by a rattler is typically an older teen or young adult male, and usually with a decently-quantifiable BAC.

Depends where you are. I don't know a single neighbor around here who is not a gun owner and either a hunter or avid shooter or both. All are proficient. The anti-gun crowd keeps a real low profile. The only gun accident I can recall happened about 15 years ago. Kids fooling with (gangsta) dad's pistol in a nearby town. One shot the other. Dad went back to the Big House as he wasn't supposed to have weapons any more.
While there are many morons who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a firearm, and lots of unskilled people carrying concealed who haven't shot more than a box of shells thru their "personal defense" weapons, I don't think it's fair to put all gun owners in the same league with people who have chained up, frothy-mouthed Pit Bulls in their dirtyards.

They are used all the time but not really reported.

The NRA has no trouble digging up 8 or so every month from various news papers around the country.

I imagine all my neighbors own and know how to use guns. It is interesting around here I am starting to see more and more open carry.

The last murder in my town were a couple teen wanna be gangsters that broke in and beat an elderly women to death with a flashlight and stole what little money she had. Some of the teens kinfolk saw a text where the punk was talking about it and turned him in. I think he got life in prison.

If you thought I intended to put ALL gun owners in that league I did not make myself clear. The person I responded to referenced a hypothetical neighborhood ( I pictured an urban neighborhood).

I responed with intended humor and some accuracy with my pictured scenario of an urban neighborhood with lots of pit bulls.

Clearly if you live in the outdoors with rattlesnakes, coyotes and other harmful varmits you also keep a firearm handy. The other varmits who like to come out and steal gasoline need to be watched out for too.

Those reports in American Rifleman are footnoted. Even politically motivated haters can cross-check them, if they have the honesty to do so.
