We saw Frontline last night. That mine sounds like a horrible idea.

I saw a TV show on it last night which also concluded the mine was a horrible idea and presented the topic with that slant. After watching the slanted laid out like a non slanted news program I did not like the mine. How much was me and how much was due to the slant I do not know; it was slanted.

On the one hand, I can understand the environmental impact. On the other, if we're going to develop an electric/hydrogen economy, independent from earth-destroying oil, then we're going to need sources of cheap copper.

Mixed feelings here.

According to Frontline, there is no shortage of copper. Copper is readily available thru lots of other copper mines.

Forget about the salmon.
  • 80.6 billion lbs. of copper
  • 5.6 billion lbs. of molybdenum
  • 107.4 million oz. of gold
  • Commercially significant amounts of silver, rhenium and palladium

Copper prices are already high. Going to electric for things like vehicles will raise them even more unless new sources are found.

40K sq. mile watershed? One of the most pristine in the world? Largest salmon fishery anywhere? Giant open pit mine? I'm sure these mining companies have the best interests of the people of Alaska and their resources foremost in their plans.
What could possibly go wrong?

Is the high price a consequence of inadequate supply?
